It could be said that in Milliways, Halloween is redundant. Besides, it's not exactly a holiday that they celebrated on the Twelve Colonies. Between these two facts, Gaius Baltar can probably be forgiven for coming downstairs and not realizing that anything is going on. Particularly considering that Bar isn't speaking to him, and won't change ( Read more... )

Halloween is Grace's favorite holiday. The costumes, the candy, the outrageous parties: what's not to love? The only reason she isn't dressed up now is because it's not Halloween in Oklahoma City; and, well, maybe Bar doesn't quite know what to make of her yet. All evidence suggests Grace is rarely fazed by such things as an unexpected change in appearance, and Bar likes a challenge.

Also, she'd taken one look at the be-costumed crowd, marched up to Bar and asked for a set of devil's horns, just to get Earl's goat. The horns are currently nestled in her wild dark blonde hair, behind a group of braids at her right temple. Everything else is pure Grace Hanadarko: dusty boots, jeans and fitted leather jacket.

Gaius won't have to talk her into buying drinks. She's already got two beers down at her end of the bar, if he's interested.

"How about that."

Grace takes another long pull on her cigarette, squinting at him through the smoke.

"You and me? We got the same reputation," she grins. "But I could never completely shake the upbringing. My family's like a bad rash that keeps coming back."

Some of them are a real pain in her ass.

"So what do you use all that brain power for, Gaius?"

"Initially, computer programming and systems design. I was an innovator in distributed networking." He has another puff and washes it down with a mouthful of beer before continuing. "Now? Now, I'm the de facto leader of what is charitably described by its detractors as a radical monotheistic cult."

"That's a major career change there, man. Let me guess. Your world went to hell and people decided to find God."

She's seen crap like that before.

Of course, when and where she sees it, humanity hasn't and isn't about to be overrun by machines. This is admittedly bigger.

Still, annoyance makes her stomach twist and something shifts in her expression. She's plainly interested, yes, but belligerence and the sort of challenge that moves into her eyes when a suspect's story is starting to unravel also put in an appearance.

[OOC: So sorry for vanishing. I've had a bad case of flu that wouldn't go away. Apologies!]

"More like the worlds went to hell and people decided to find a better God. They felt that the Lords of Kobol had betrayed them, let them down. And so, lost and wondering, they fell in behind the first person to offer an alternative. Which happened to be the god of our enemies."

The disdain for his flock is clear in his voice. He never asked to be a spiritual leader. He found peace within himself for the things that he had done, and he only wanted to be left alone.

"Sheep."

She tosses the word out there like a dare, waiting to see how he'll handle it, and widens her eyes and pushes her lips together like a child who knows she's said something bad and enjoyed it anyway.

"At least you can shear sheep for the wool," Gaius says, taking another drink. "That puts them a step ahead of this lot."

Grace snorts, leaning back to better regard him.

"Why do you do it?"
