What i always do when i'm calling to see if a shop is open and don't want to sound silly by asking "Are you open?" when they answer, is ask "How late are you open today?"

Yeah, I've done that too when I'm thinking. In this case it was relatively early on a Sunday morning and I was really expecting a machine, guess I was off my game a bit.

This underscores a much bigger divide between Canada and the US. Every single little piddly retail outlet has a website in the States. In Canada, you're lucky if you can find them on YellowPages.ca

Maybe if they grow sufficiently tired of people calling them up to ask them their hours they'll all get one.
