I would say cats, but I religiously keep my collection to three at a time -- so I'm not sure that constitutes a true collection.
I have recently started recollecting marbles (I had a huge collection as a kid -- I had hundreds, which most represented characters is stories I was making up in my head).
I don't know what happened to that collection, but a few years ago, I worked at a booth at the local Renaissance Faire that sold marbles, and when they went out of business, they gave me a few jars of their better ones. Now my sister and I pick up marbles at auctions, yard sales, excetera, and were learning about what makes a collectible (and thus valuable) marble to sell. The rest we keep because they're pretty.
Pretty is GOOD. I remember having a few glass marbles as a kid. Are they manufactured anymore? Incidentally, are there any particular colors you look for...you KNOW I hit the occasional thrift or antique store? And, if you care to share, what's your price point (like my less than $10 limit)?
Marbles are very pretty! I can see wanting to collect those. I used to make stained glass panels once, I really enjoy the beauty of glass. Some of the artists used to put marbles in their panels and it often had quite a stunning effect.
My "collecting" has varied over the years. One of the most consistent, however, has always been books. If I find a writer I like, I try to collect all the books by that author, which can be quite a chore, but also a treasure hunt, when the titles are out of print. It also requires a lot of space. That's another great thing about the eReader. Now I can collect the eBook version when they exist and I don't mind getting rid of a lot of books I might never read again. I got rid of most of my ST books. I've cut my overall physical library in half at this point. Even my reference books are now digital
( ... )
Yes, books are my great weakness as well. And I won't weed the collection, I did that when I went off to uni, getting rid of all the stuff I enjoyed but thought I'd grown out of. Mistake, you never grow out of really bad SF, the Saint, Tarzan, Peri Rhodan Peacelord of the Universe. I really regret the Peri Rhodan, it was so bad I loved it.
LOL, I can understand. I've had to buy books more than once, too, but overall I don't regret culling my collection. Most went to book auctions to help the local library or charities.
Obviously, you knew Ron. (smile) He had multiple collections, too. Problem was, he never AND I MEAN NEVER got rid of anything.
Right there with you on the regional coding. I have been close to buying one of the <$50 multi-region DVD players. Bought Colditz. Can't watch it. Also, I really REALLY want to buy the seasons of Hustle not shown in the US (up yours, AMC...if it was good enough to run 8 seasons in the UK, you could at least show them here)
MFU fanfic and cookery books. I am a sucker for fanfic and cookery books. I have so many cookery books that most have been relegated to the cellar and don't see the light of day from one year's end to the next. But that does not stop me buying new ones, oh no. On high days and holidays when I have some extra time on my hands, I sally forth and retrieve a few (or ten) of them and then sit on my comfy sofa and lose myself in them. Bliss!
I started buying MFU zines in 2008. Two things struck me the hardest. One, the quality of art, printing & covers had dramatically improved since the late 70's. Two, damn things cost a lot more, too.
I still am trying to think of a way for all of them to spontaneously combust upon my death. To quote Kate Todd, "I'm dead, and I'm embarrassed". There is no one in my life outside of you all who would understand and/or appreciate my zines. (or my flash drives full on online fic)
LOL! Leyosura and I have a pact that whoever is left behind has to wipe any compromising folders from the other's PC that would otherwise be misunderstood by those not of a MFU fannish persuasion.
Maybe you could do something similar and buddy-up with someone who would love and appreciate your fanzines and rescue them from Spontaneous Combustion at the appropriate time? If it wasn't for the fact that I expect to be cremated, I'd have the most salacious ones buried with me, just to confound some poor archaeologist of the future should they ever happen to dig me up :-)
I love the art in some of the hardcopy MFU zines. Suzan Lovett did some absolute beauties.
I have some black Wedgwood jasperware, my mother bought the first piece on a factory visit with the Mother's Union when I was a child and now I have a dozen pieces. You can't find the black very often.
