Re: Exploding doors

Anyone ever had a patio door explode for no apparent reason? Mine did last evening and I'm trying to figure out why.

I was in the kitchen and there was a very loud but brief BANG. I thought it was a firework or something, but when I went back to the living room the glass on the stationary side of the patio door was crazed from top to bottom. ( Read more... )

Not a patio door, no. A window at my parents' house did that once . . . the person who came to replace it said it probably had a small crack that we didn't notice in just the right spot that it wouldn't take much for it to shatter.

That could be it. Not sure why there would be a crack so close to teh bottom though, unless it really was a killer chipmunk.

I was thinking maybe water got between the two panes of glass and the temperature changes might have caused the problem.

Especially since my phone stopped working right after. That was an unrelated glitch, but tell that to your brain while trying to get to sleep.

Meteor! :)

I dont know where you live but /maybe/ someone was out hunting very far away and the bullet traveled juuuuust far enough to ping the glass but no longer had the momentum to break it? Possible, even if the odds would be...a long shot

People used to hunt in the fields across the road from our pond, until one idiot shot at the ducks on our pond and put a couple bullets into someone's siding. It is illegal to shoot across a road and to shoot in the direction of houses that are within range of the gun. Farmer had to put up "No hunting" signs and deal with pheasants in his corn some other way.

However, a bullet from that direction would have come from the front of the house and the patio door is at the back. There is a 6 foot fence around it and the only angle I can think of is to shoot from the window of the house behind me. The owner is a nice lady in her late 50's early 60's who lives alone and I can't think of any reason she would shoot at me.

My first guess would be a bullet … or do you, by chance, live near a golf course? Or perhaps have a neighbor who’s a golfer and likes to practice in his/her yard?

Water between the panes could be another explanation, depending on your climate.

I’ve had birds hit windows but never that hard.

Did you check with neighbors to see whether anyone else had a similar problem?

*** Added note: I googled it, and spontaneous shattering of glass doors is a well-documented thing that happens. Apparently it’s mostly due to temperature fluctuations. I’m surprised, because every home I’ve lived in for 40+ years has had a sliding glass door, and I’ve never heard this before.

No golf course and another house within about four yards of my privacy fence. Nothing to shoot at from any angle except houses. To go over my fence (nothing went through) would involve shooting from the deck or upstairs window of the neighbor's house directly at my house.

I'm leaning toward the water between the panes and temperature fluctuations idea.
