p.s. Turkey is a relatively safe place, Istanbul much more so. Terrorism is a problem in the south-east, but the distances involved are such that it would be like being afraid to visit New York City if we were at war with Cuba. Istanbul has not been a terrorist target for several years, and as long as you can watch out for pickpockets, you're fine.
