"Come as you are,
as you were,
as I want you to be..."

She stepped out of the shower and stared with heavy lids at her gaunt reflection in mirror. She grabbed her breasts, once pert and full and squeezed the sad sacks of flesh together, giving the semblance of cleavage, then let them fall, sagging and stretch-marked, back against her chest.

I love dropping lyrics in as accent points in a story, and you do that so well here the Nirvana Nostalgia and the 90s Club Kid reviving a little of that flavor. I didn't even need to play the tune. You got it going in my head!

As a child of the 90's, as soon as I saw the Nevermind prompt, all I could hear was Nirvana, lol! I figured I'd be doing Kurt a disservice if I didn't write an ode to him. I went to a concert this past weekend and, while I have definitely moved out of the grunge frame of mind, I was amazed at some of the aging folks who are still living the rock n' roll lifestyle, hardcore!

Great use of this very melancholic song and an apropos shout out to those wasted days. You painted such a clear picture of this gal getting ready for her night out....nothing has changed for her. And I like that she acknowledges that to herself in your last line!

Thank you. I was really surprised no one else heard Nirvana in this prompt! I am obviously a child of this generation.

"Wasted days" is a perfect expression for the Grunge Era too! My husband and I, we still have a few old flannel shirts from back in the day, and we grew up to be professionals, parents...but I still run into some folks who never let go of the life, the existentialism.

This is so nostalgic! I was a little young for this look, but man, was I starry eyed at the time when my oldest sister captured this look, introduced me to this sound...I was molded into the kind of teen I was because of these years.

I thought of this song too, the first time the prompt came around, but wouldn't have thought to use it to make such a vivid reminder of that era.

This character is someone who is going nowhere, and her present seems kind of ratty and unlovely in a lot of ways, but she is clearly perfectly happy with it. It suits her, and all this time later, she still isn't regretting a thing. That's an unusual perspective for most people her age!

That trip down memory lane was fabulous--I was such a grunge kid so long ago. The setting in my head was my friend's mangey apartment from the nineties, with the peeling plaster and the take-out boxes all over the floor.
