These Modern AUs fit the bill:

kathkin's "The Wrong Trouser-Leg of Time," a time traveling Modern AU https://merlinfic.livejournal.com/714179.html that clocks in at 12,000 words but there's a sequel/prequel "A Tale of Two Arthurs" https://merlinfic.livejournal.com/735583.html that brings the total word count up to 25,000 words ( ... )

Just two additions, for anyone who's interested:

Podfic of "Student Prince", read by FayJay herself

Podfic of "Easy There", read by RevolutionaryJo

I second Student Prince. It's a fandom classic. I highly recommend the podfic.

In Time of Trial by shinetheway - Summary: Uther fears his son's power, and Merlin has helped Arthur flee to escape imprisonment. Now the two of them must fight to regain Arthur's rightful place in Camelot.

The Crown of the Summer Court by astolat - Summary: "The king sent me to get you," Merlin said, with a tone that implied strongly that he wasn't rolling his eyes where Arthur could see, but just wait until his back was turned. "He said you're to get changed into formal clothes and meet him in the Great Hall, there's a delegation coming from the Summer Court."

The Tournament of All Magicks by corilannam - Summary: Merlin was flattered to be invited to compete in a magical tournament to crown the sorcery champion of Albion. Accepting the invitation probably wasn't his brightest idea.

Post hoc, ergo propter hoc (‘After this, therefore because of this.’) - Summary: History books would not remember Gaius’ death precipitating the greatest war Albion had ever seen. That blame lay entirely with an inexperienced sorcerer and the Prince ( ... )

Just to add the podfics for anyone who's interested in them:

Podfic of "In Time of Trial", read by FayJay

Podfic of "The Crown of the Summer Court". read by FayJay

Podfic of "Time Forward", read by SweetandSharp

Definitely second Crown of the Summer Court and Time Forward, especially as podfics.

Immortal and Imperishable by prettysailorsoldier - Summary: When Merlin first arrives in Camelot, he is certain of the destiny that awaits him: Clearing the throne of the Pendragon dynasty to make way for the Once and Future King. Working with Nimueh and a rebel band of druids, he is sent to infiltrate Camelot, working from the inside to overthrow those that will challenge the rise of Albion. He didn't count on becoming the manservant of the crown prince--or, worst of all, liking him--and, slowly Merlin begins to wonder if the king he has been searching for is a lot closer than anyone believed.

Rheged by McShame - Summary: Post S5 (AU); canon to the end of S4 & part of the way through S5. Gwen and Arthur have been married for several years, Merlin's magic has been revealed and Arthur has now reached a kind of cold peace with it. Then a delegation arrives from a kingdom based on magic, and suddenly Destiny is starkly and ruthlessly to the fore. The question is should - can - it be avoided?

M-RYS by mornmeril - Summary: The year is ( ... )

I’ve read a number of A/O stories in a couple of fandoms and my amateur literary analysis is this ( ... )

The trope stems from werewolf lore/fiction and was first developed in Supernatural fandom (big surprise). Alphas are the bosses in a wolf pack, Omegas the bottom of the hirarchy, Betas neutral in the middle.

Here's an article about it on fanlore. Since you're not into mpreg, I don't think you'll much enjoy Omegaverse since many of the stories end in mpreg.
