Disillusionment is a really long one that doesn't really have Merlin angry per se, but it addresses a lot of the issues in the show about how Merlin's "destiny" didn't seem to really be going anywhere, and it deals with the consequences of Merlin leaving Camelot both on a personal level for the different characters and on the level of Camelot as a whole. (In other words, plenty of angst!) It is gen, but it's well written gen/bromance (I'm normally a Merlin/Arthur kind of girl, too). Author's Summary: This is what happens when Merlin is lost. Oh my God, hey! Nice to meet you. And that - that - is all the encouragement I needed to start reading it! I always love gen fics written by Merthur shippers, it gives them that extra bit of spark that seems to be missing from usual gen stories. And as the mad slasher that I am, I need it more than air. Second Choice by chibifanwriter is also a modern AU: It is always Gwen whom Arthur chooses first. It doesn’t matter if she’s taken, married, engaged, widowed or single. It is always Gwen whom Arthur chooses first. And it is Merlin whom Arthur turns to when that relationship goes, as it inevitably does, rotten. Or Merlin gets sick of seeing Gwen and Arthur together and runs away. Then comes back.
Oh my God, I've actually read that last one and it broke my heart. But somehow got me all obsessed afterwards. Damn, I'm a masochist. :) Thank you so much for the recs! P.S.: I'm halfway through Disillusionment as well. The most common sense I've ever seen Merlin having, both in Canon and fanfic. ;-)
