You create such lovely soporific images of your life. Even with the snow and ice, idyllic, though that isn't to say I underestimate the toil.

But it's nice to hear you sounding so ultimately contented.

You know, I was thinking I should've taken some -- there was this mist that kept depositing layers of ice on everything throughout the day (though you Brits probably don't find fog and mist as lovely as I do, where I grew up it was relatively rare) -- unfortunately both our cameras are broken.

What is your idea of childhood development? Do you rely on any particular developmental psychology, or are the ideas of your childrens' minds based mostly on empirical findings?
Reason is, I had a niece born last year, and so I'm tangentially interested in such--as you term it--dad shit.
Specifically, when do you start inculcating them in your work processes?

I don't have any particular approach. Tagging along with farmwork is educational, I suppose, but also non-optional: there's no other way for us to get anything done.

As for the rest, I think many problems can be avoided by being able to recognize the real limitations of a child's mind and emotions, while at the same time treating them with respect. Many a liberal household have I visited where the latter comes at the expense of the former -- the parents can't conceive of showing respect for their children in any way other than pretending that they are fully independent, functional adults -- and all sorts of problems seem to ensue.
