You can get replacement batteries fairly inexpensively, and from what I read, it isn't that hard to do it yourself. Bummer all the same though. I guess it's not still under warranty anymore, is it?
I've seen ones for sale on websites for $30-40ish bucks but you have to do it yourself. It's $65 through Apple but you don't get back yours - you just get a refurbed on in return.
I don't know that I want to try it myself only because if I fuck it up, I don't have the option of letting apple fix it then.
The standard warrenty is 1 year but the battery replacement program ($65 including shipping) has no time limit. I got my iPod in October of 2004. And of course, they're color, video and 10 gigs larger now to start then mine. (Of course. Mine's 4th gen.)
I got it October 2004. :/ It was probably manufactured two summers ago. Sadly, 18 months is a standard battery life, though some people go 2 or even 3 years with the battery before it goes. Rechargables only can recharge for so long, you know?
Aw, you're a sweetie. I spent a few hours last night watching replacement video and reading up on it. And I discovered I didn't feel anywhere near sure enough of my ability to change it myself. It requires removing quite a bit of parts and the battery is GLUED IN which makes it very difficult apparently and can easily break your logic board. Eep. Plus, if I tried to change it myself and broke it, I wouldn't be able to use the apple battery replacement program then.
So today we hit the apple store and I ended up trading it in for a refurbed one with a new battery. We're saving for a car downpayment but Love said to take the cash out of that to get it fixed. Now I just need to sell some jewelry or something to help put the funds back. I wasn't going to do it - just wait until who knows when - but he didn't want me to be without it completely and he knew how sad I was it died. He's such a great guy.
So I feel bad that we spent the cash but I'm excited that I have one again. It's super sweet of you to think belated birthday gift though.
