It had been an ambush from the start. Set up. Fault intelligence. From the moment Steve parachuted off the jet with the other agents he knew something felt off. Their landing was too perfect. They regrouped without a hitch. Making contact with Maria and the rest of the group was simple. Steve had never had a simple mission in his entire life. Something was always waiting around the corner and maybe that paranoia is what kept him and a handful of his men alive for this long ( ... )

Maria didn't like this any more than Steve did. The entire scenario left her feeling uneasy. The further they got into the mission, the more she felt that something was about to go terribly wrong. She had never once anticipated what she was about to hear, though.

"Cap?" she answered, her brows immediately furrowing. She didn't like the way he sounded. Steve wasn't supposed to sound like that. She kept a sharp eye out but stopped in her tracks, ready to go find him if she had to. She would drag him back to the chopper herself, if she had to. "Steve, talk to me. What's going on?

Steve lifted a hand to touched one of his wounds. The rebar was bent and twisted. Even if he somehow mustered up the strength to get himself free all the struggling would just have him bleeding out in moments. The serum could only do so much for Steve. He wasn't like Thor or the Hulk. Even Tony's suit kept him relatively safe from harm. Steve's suit was supposed to help, but with the explosion, strain and after taking all that fire it was no good. It was only a matter of time before it all gave out ( ... )

She listened to his words intently, a cold knot forming in her stomach as his meaning started to sink in. He didn't intend to walk out of this out of this.

Well, fuck that. Maria had other plans. She had pulled him out of the fire before and she'd do it again. The two of them had been through far too much to just... He wasn't doing this to her.

"Rogers, you know I can't do that," came her cool reply. She didn't are who was listening, or who thought she was losing it, she was out of there. She started storming off the bridge headed to the deck. She would fly down there herself and get him. She didn't care what she had to do. She shot glares and curses at anyone who threatened her way, ready to let it come to blows, if she had to. No one was stopping her. "You just had better hang tight."

She was going to fight him on that. He was well aware of her stubborn streak. She wasn't going to leave him down here if she thought that she could come rescue him. That just meant that Steve would have to convince her that he was well beyond help here. By the time she got out here he would most certainly be dead. He wasn't going anywhere and he knew it. He could feel his body getting colder. He was losing blood very fast. His head was starting to swim. He needed to keep himself together in order to convince her to stay the hell away.

"No!" His voice was as loud as he could get it in this state. He had never yelled in her presence, but he had to get her attention. She needed to understand that he wasn't walking out of this alive. She could at least bomb the rest of the compound and keep these assholes from hurting anyone else. "Just--please. Maria, a building came down on me. I got--" He craned his head downward to survey his damage. He winced and licked his lips. "--rebar coming out of my chest from multiple directions. My choice, ( ... )

"Steve--" she choked, coming to an immediate halt at his words, feeling the wind getting knocked out of her. He couldn't do this, he was Captain America. He'd been frozen solid and lived to tell the tale, he'd battled aliens and succeeded at pulling off one-man rescue missions. This wasn't the first suicide mission he'd lived through. He couldn't die.

But she knew that wasn't true. There, collapsed on her knees and choking on tears that she refused to let fall. She could see him clearly. His pale blue eyes and blond hair gleaming, far too beautiful even in death. If she could just get to him, hold him again, kiss his bruised cheeks. She knew that she would give her life to have that, if only it would work. "Steve, you can't... God damn it, Steve, I'm not leaving you."

She was crying, she realized. All that fighting for nothing, because the tears were flowing freely now. She was sitting in the middle of some hall and she couldn't drag herself back onto her feet.

It hurt just to hear her say his name like that. He was buried under a lot of rubble and had things through his body, but the most pain was coming from having to tell her to stay there. Steve wasn't going to let other people get killed though. Whoever these people were spelled trouble. They couldn't attempt a rescue because of how much time he had left and there was no telling if they'd get out of the area with their lives. He wouldn't put more lives in jeopardy. He already watched Johnson get blown sky high. The rest of his team had been taken out by gunfire and hand to hand combat inside one of the facilities. He was the only one still breathing. He was going to give the order even if it meant no way out ( ... )

Maria couldn't help but feel that this was somehow her fault for letting him get close. She'd finally let someone in and now they were both paying the price. It was another death that she got to hang over her own head. All of it was her fault. She should have pulled them out of this mission when she first got that gut feeling.

"Steve..." she mumbled, her voice shaking. She managed to pull herself to one wall, her knees curled up to her chest. She laid her cheek against one knee and wept, shivering. She vaguely registered a few agents spotting her and turning around to give her privacy. She didn't care who saw, though, or who listened. She might as well be turning in her resignation as it were, she wouldn't be able to come back after this. She could be honest.

"I love you. See? You... You have to stay with me," she pleaded. She let out a sob, squeezing her eyes shut. "I need you, still."

Steve squeezed his eyes shut and tried to keep himself calm. He knew that if he let himself get upset that he'd bleed out faster. He'd bleed out more and he wouldn't be able to have this conversation with her. That meant staying calm. That meant trying to keep her calm, but from what he could gather that wasn't going to happen. She was going to fall apart and that was the worst part. Steve was a helper. He was a protector. He couldn't protect her from this. He couldn't solve this problem and it was killing him. It wasn't that he was staring death in the face, but it was the fear that she wouldn't be okay ( ... )

But Maria didn't know that. She'd been strong her whole life, learned to stand on her own two feet, but recently she'd been leaning on Steve. Would she be able to go back to how she lived before, now? Now that she knew what it was like to have someone who gave a damn. She reached up and wiped at her tears, trying desperately to calm herself. She needed to listen to him and hang onto these last words.

She tried to grab onto words herself, something to say that might give him comfort. She was coming up short. She took a deep breath and whimpered softly as she released it, trying to get a hold of her head. "It's been an honor, Rogers," she whispered. "Do you still believe in God?"

She seemed to calm and even out which made Steve breathe a little easier. He knew he was going to die, but he didn't want to go without knowing she was going to be okay. He couldn't let go without knowing that she'd be able to carry on without him. They were soldiers. It was the only way for Steve to look at it without feeling his heart drop into his stomach. If he fell back on that then he didn't have to think about the pain that was churning in the pit of his stomach. He didn't have to deal with it.

Steve's breathing was getting softer over the open comm line. He listened to the soldiers move around outside the debris pile. They had no doubt thought they won. They weren't aware that Steve had given to the order to have the compound bombed. "Yeah. I do." He swallowed hard and tried to relax. He was going to die listening to her voice. He was sure of it. "You don't have to worry." He wanted to sooth her. "Gonna see my parents. I'll be alright."

Deep breaths. In and out. Her breathing started to fall in time with his, somehow finding comfort in that. If he still believed in God, even after everything the two of them had seen, maybe there'd be some hop yet. A fresh wave of tears started to spill on her cheeks but she didn't lose it this time. They fell quietly and she let them.

The comm crackled as another voice came on line, taking the break in the conversation to notify them that the nuke had been sent. If they were deploying it without her consent, then they'd already employed emergency chain of command. It was all for the better, she knew, but her heart sunk. Their fate was sealed and this was really it. Their last precious minutes.

"Then maybe you can put in a good word for me, Steve," she said quietly, moving past the interruption like it hadn't happened. She didn't know if she believed it, but that didn't matter because he did. Maybe he could believe enough for the both of them. "Do you think you can do that? Find me on the other side?"

Steve was relieved to hear the other voice inform him of the command being followed. It scared him, but he wasn't going to let Maria know that. He'd be dead before the nuke even hit though. He just had to get through these moments. He could do that. He could make it through the last moments just for her. He wouldn't break because he knew that would send her right back over the edge. Admitting to his fear wasn't going to take him.

Steve smiled when her voice replaced the silence they were fading into. "I'm already mentally writing your recommendation letter, Commander." He would find her on the other side. She could pretty much count on that. Steve had faith, but he was a little curious about what would actually happen. If he just saw infinite darkness that would be okay as well. It would have to be okay.

"Of course. I'll be the guy in the skin tight costume." He laughed softly, but it sounded more pained than anything remotely amusing.

She laughed at that. She hadn't even been aware that laughter was something she was capable of at the moment, but there it was. It was almost a choke, but a laugh, nevertheless. She wrapped her arm around herself as it turned into another soft sob.

"Wouldn't want to leave the spangles behind, would you?" she murmured. She felt another sharp stab at her chest and she started to shiver a little. Her body could tell that it was too much. "Coulson would be so disappointed. I bet he'll be happy to see you, too."

"Couldn't even if I tried, ma'am." Steve would always be Captain America. All the time in the world wouldn't take that away. He would be Captain America. A shield for those who couldn't defend themselves. Once they had bombed this place maybe they could send someone in to find his body to have a proper burial. He didn't count on that though. they'd probably bury an empty casket which was okay. He was a soldier. He was familiar with that type of burial. They had been preparing to do that for Bucky, but they never got the chance. He often wondered how the service went.

Steve smiled at the memory of Coulson. He nodded his head slowly. "I'll be sure to sign his cards when I see him." He wouldn't make the same mistake twice. He would be okay though right? He wasn't going into this darkness alone. Maria was in his ear and other people were waiting on the other side for him. He'd probably even see Bucky. That was nice.

"I'll be waiting, ma'am." His breathing got more shallow until eventually it cut out completely. Captain America was no

Maria clung to his voice, to every last word. It was all that was keeping her on the ground, now. She had to smile about the good Captain and Coulson both out in whatever world life after death had to offer them. Maybe Steve was right, maybe there was something there. She had to hold on to anything that might help.

But then he went silent. She couldn't hear his breathing any longer and panic started to clutch at her chest again. "... Steve?" her voice cracked and she knew he wouldn't answer. "Steve, please..."

Maria covered her mouth, and pain wracked her body. It clawed at her chest and tore her open, leaving her empty inside. A hollow cry ripped from her throat and she sobbed as she reached to tear her comm link from her ear. She threw it at the opposite wall. She didn't know how long it took for the others to find her. The passage of time had little meaning any longer and she disconnected completely from her body as someone ushered her to her room. It was done. Captain America was dead.
