Oh no, he's aaaaaall buzzard. :)

I had no idea that buzzards have red heads. Your specimen looked way too big for a pileated but I couldn't think of another (large) redheaded bird. I've learned something new today!

I'm so ignorant of photography terms and equipment. You're probably right. I could see all the detail with my eyes but the cameras simply couldn't capture it. In fact, the picture almost makes him look farther away than he was.
