looks like a good time ... and you're right about biking in DC being pretty sweet ... I used to regularly do the "Bike the Sites" bicycle tours ... the monuments, lit at night, viewed from a bicycle are the way to go
Waking at an ungodly hour so that we could get to Gravelly Point by 6am to meet our bike club and get registration materials. Seriously. I don't know how you early morning commuters do it. I'm unhappy if I have to get up before 7:30.
yeah well, one sort of gets used to it ... and driving to the Metro before 6:00am is generally pretty light on the traffic front which makes it bearable
There were two rides: the full 24 mile route and the 11 mile family fun ride. The family route skipped the Rock Creek and GW Parkways and met up with the full route folks on Meade for the ride to Iwo Jima and Air Force Memorials. The long, slow 190 foot climb over two miles up the GW Parkway was tough and I stayed in a pretty low gear for that. There were some other steep, but fairly short, climbs to the Iwo Jima (I walked that one because it was too crowded to get any kind of momentum on the bike) and Air Force Memorials which had me panting. But then, I hate hills. :)
The good thing is that it isn't a race and you can take your time along the route for breathers as necessary. I wouldn't recommend it to someone ~just~ getting on a bike, but if you feel comfortable riding a few miles a couple of times a week, I'd say go for the shorter ride.
