Garden Maiden

I had basically completed this four years ago, but it seemed something was missing and not quite right.  The woman in the foreground is the Wife, and she didn't think the rendering was an accurate likeness.  (This is why I hate doing portraits most of all.)  Well there are limits to my prowess - I can't help it if no matter how big I make the ( Read more... )

Beautiful painting. The colors and lighting are fantastic (it looks as though it is meant to be early morning or perhaps evening?). And of course, Belle perfectly complements the scene. :)

Yes, that's morning light coming in low, burning off the mist and dew; the basket carrying loaves of freshly baked bread. Ironic, as my wife HATES mornings and usually I am the one making breakfast!

the lighting in the tree and sky remind me of the woodblock prints by Kawase Haoru. In fact, when I saw the picture, the bottom half of it was off-screen, just the wisteria up, and that in itself almost stood on its own as a composition. I can't really see the details at this resolution, but it looks like you are right to be proud of the dress on the Maiden :]

Yes, when I upload the photo to LJ it seems some resolution is lost, so the fine features are not clearly visible. Maybe if I specified a larger size there would be improvement, but I hate varying the picture size all the time - I've settled on this size (don't want to fill the entire screen) and generally it does the job. I don't think most people have your discerning eye!

Oh, cool! I found that if I go to your LJ picture upload album, I can in fact see the higher res version. Even your cat's whiskers!

Wow, how lovely! I imagine the stones in the stone wall and on the house would be difficult, they look great! And I really love the large tree.

Thanks. I have spent many a year studying trees! Stone is very difficult, but around here there is a LOT of limestone used in buildings and walls. In fact, there are old abandoned quarries within a few miles of my house where it all came from, so I see that stone every day - therefore attempting it was inevitable.
