No clue. If it's the library file and not the music files you could just make a new one?

Yeah, once the itunes issue gets annoying enough that's what I'll do. And then I'm going to simply pretend that I never saw this error message and there's nothing wrong at all with the hard drive (& that I'm obsessively making backups just for the fun of it. Whee!)

This looks vaguely similar to something that happened to my parent's eMac and was basically one of the first signs of the hard drive failing. I have no advice on how to fix it except that I'd keep making those obsessive back-ups and consider taking it to a repair place. As for the iTunes thing I'd say try replacing the library file.

Thanks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's more of an OS problem than a hardware problem - reformatting the drive would sure be less painful than replacing it. Urgh.

D: I would book an appointment asap at a Mac Store. If they can fix it for you on the spot they don't charge. Hope everything turns out okay!
