Reflecting on my own complaining about cell phones and public phone conversations, I wondered if it was a generational thing. For example, my husband previewed the Jonas Brothers' concert film for his theatre

Cell phones can be rude!thetoymakerMarch 6 2009, 04:35:29 UTC
I remember one time at the grocery when the boy was small and a woman was cussing all the swears into her cell phone. All of a sudden she looked up and realized she wasn't in a soundproof bubble. Major apologizing followed.
Glad to hear that the Jonas Bros. are not your hub's target audience... or visa versa... :-)

Oh, dear. At least that woman did realize she was being inappropriate and apologized. I think that's what bugs me, the obliviousness of some of these cell conversationalists of anyone or anything around them. It's like they do think they have a mobile phone booth around them, but they don't.
Brief chatting on a cellphone in public doesn't bother me as much as texting in a crowd/group. Now that's rude!
BTW, what complaint did your husband have about the JB movie? I took the kids, and thought it was pretty entertaining (if, in spots, derivative of A Hard Day's Night). Still, those Brothers have got some real musical talent, and they seem to be appreciative and respectful of their audience. The 3D was really amazing.
It's not the talking on the phone in public that bothers me per se but the obliviousness of anyone or anything around them. People have shockingly inappropriate conversations in overly loud voices or they're so wrapped up in their conversation they don't notice anyone around them. (People who are on the phone when they're in a restaurant at a table with other people. And it's not an unavoidable business call or an emergency. That's irksome. (Then again, I find call waiting rude.)
I haven't noticed texting as a problem yet.
I don't think my husband had anything against the Jonas Brothers themselves, but he was raised on big band music and has never been a huge modern pop fan. He thought the movie was too loud, though he could have done something about that, and I gathered he wasn't sufficiently thrilled by the 3-D aspect.
