Name:
flyakate, also known as Kate, Katie
Team: Peace!
Let's talk about:
flyakate!
1. How long have you been writing fan fiction and/or making fan art and/or whatever else (vids, knitted goods, pornographic gingerbread cookies)?
After some combing through my lj pages, I have discovered that my first story was posted a little more than 4 years ago (in RENT fandom, oh how the time
flies). Before that, I remember writing down scenes from tv shows and movies that I enjoyed, but I don't think I ever finished any of them.
2. Have you participated or are you participating in any other fandoms?
I wrote many RENT fics and did some of the fandom stuff for a while, and then mostly just fic writing in O11. I remember reading lots of Harry Potter fanfic in the lull between book 4 and 5, like many. Many of my formative fanfic reading and experiencing comes from the Due South Hexwood archive, which is kind of hilarious. SGA was the first time that I was a "part" of fandom in a big way, by doing fic challenges and engaging with the awesome people who follow the show... and who are still creating fantastic, awesome things that totally stand on their own now that our show is over.
3. What fanwork are you most proud of? Or, what is your favourite of your fanworks? (links, please!)
I'm really proud of my
AU universe where John teaches second grade and then meets Rodney, college professor, and there is much adorableness. I love canon!boys and have enjoyed writing them (especially
Candid which just sort of fell from my fingers onto my laptop when
sheafrotherdon posted that pic so many whenevers ago) but there's something about John + kids + Rodney + the ways to make all of the cast fit in (Ronon the PE teacher, Carson the upper grade science teacher, Keller the admissions assistant) that always makes me happy.
Overflow is one of my favorites from that world, with
Lips and Hearts a close second. As always, check warnings on the fic before you read!
Wow, way to not properly answer the question. :o)
4. As far as creative processes go, what type of writer/artist are you? Do you create an outline/find photo references/make maps, etc., or do you jump in and go with the flow?
I've done both. With many stories, I start writing it because I see an image or hear a snatch of dialogue, or I'm trying to capture a specific emotion or something. Otherwise, I frequently just make a list of what I want to happen... which will then jog something and make me want to write it. In a perfect world, anyway.
5. Where can interested readers/viewers find more of your work? (homepage, LJ fic index, etc.)
All my fics are sorted by fandom (just that's just how dorkily I roll)
here. Go look! It's awesome!
6. Do you write original fiction (poetry, screenplays)? Do you create original art (comics, photographs, quilts, wedding cakes)? Care to share?
I do! I have several stories started (that I've had for years, some of them) and most notably tried to get a start on finishing my longest run story as a NaNoWriMo. What little I've posted is
here.
7. How are you so awesome?
Years of practice!
Let's talk about: SGA!
8. What do you enjoy most about SGA and/or SGA fandom?
The awesome people I've met (or "met") or had the privilege of reading. Y'all are extremely talented, and it's both awesome and terrifying in equal measure.
9. Why do you ship McKay/Sheppard? What draws you to the pairing, what do you like and dislike? Favourite scenes or episodes? Quotes? Screencaps? What other SGA pairings do you ship?
I love the humor even in the smallest scenes and the fact that, through it all, they have each other's back. At its most basic, I honestly think they both are the people who know each other the best, and that kind of makes my heart hurt in a good way. I love "Echoes" (because shouting!boys is hilarious) especially. And... more episodes that can no longer recall. I have a soft spot in my heart for Ronon/Keller, because it looked like a cute idea, and also because I've read it gorgeously written.
10. Why did you choose to join Team Peace?
Honestly, I was thisclose to joining Team War, because I had this glimmer of an idea for a great prank war fic. But then I was thinking and about to sign up for the challenge... and something really drew me to the idea of these poor guys so rarely get a break, so I wanted to have some adorable peaceful fic for the boys.
11. C'mon, you know you wanna! Just a bit of squee about your Match fic?
I was all set to write a totally different story, but as I was falling asleep one night, I was thinking about my prompt and the idea of peace... and an image fell into my head of John and Rodney and... well, there was my story.
12. What are your 'tells'? How can a fic of yours be spotted in the wild?
One of my friends would joke it was because I enjoy angst, but that's not always true :o) Probably something about my sentences and how they all string together. I like conversations? I dunno. Also, they are frequently posted right at the closing of the deadline, because I'm organized and prompt like that ;o)

If you have extra questions, feel more than free! I totally forgot to sign up for extra, but it's fun to talk about one's fannish-ness.
Go Team Peace!
