I actually disagree with him, quite firmly. Choosing when and how to die is dignfied. Lucky are those who have the choice, however they choose. My grandad died in his sleep, in hospital the night before a fairly routine operation for kidney stones. He was just short of 91. They put 'natural causes' on the death cert as there was no trauma - his heart just stopped, quietly. Mum saw him a few hours after, he looked asleep, and it wasn't until she touched his face and it was cold that she was sure he was dead. THAT's dignity. So is choosing to go out on a morphine overdose, rather than fading away till you're a living skeleton half mad from pain and incoherent the rest of the time. I'm sorry, but the man may be a doctor, but he's also an idiot.
Having had to watch people die, two on morphine cocktails while in the category of incoherent & pained I know death is not kind even if it is merciful; even if you get to choose how, where and when.
If one passes on in the manner of your grandfather, they are blessed; it is a kindness to the survivors. On this one, we agree to differ.
