I agree it is weird that a statement from some famous person is given great credit, rather than our crediting our personal experience, our personal rational thoughts, etc.
It reminds me of a class in college where the professor asked us, how do we know what we know? What are the authorities we trust for the knowledge we think we have? Knowledge is ... not easy to verify.

Let's say... People denying their depressed moments because someone else said it's a waste of time, people denying recognitions how bad the world is to humans 'cause someone else said not to focus on one's mind on that, people playing Biedermeier because someone else said the greatest teasure is family and big politics and other more demanding things in the world are no worth the time bothering to interfere as a small cog of the whole clockwork.
Strangely way less people take out quotes which support their worldview if it is a dark one.
Much more do that if they want to tell themselves and the world "everything is okay".
Coincidence? That's why I'm alleging that.

Astoundingly, people also use quotes more in cases where they seemingly need tp prove to themselves that the world is alright and that all's not so hopeless as it seems.
Those who believe in a bad picture of the world, strangely they don't need as many quotes by famous people to support their worldview.
Something that I systematically noticed...
