I was upset about the Facebook/Twitter issue, not because it necessarily compromises my privacy, but because it reflects how very little LJ knows or cares about their users (it's purely a money question for them apparently). Their hard core of longtime, frequent users do not want to cross post between Facebook and LJ for example ( ... )

While I'm uncomfortable with the cross posting issue, I'm more uncomfortable with it being implemented without asking users if they wanted it or to at least give us and opt out for it. For now anyway, LJ is home. I like it. I'm familiar with it. I've survived mass panic attacks about it before, where everyone was creating back up journals. The results of that is I now have an IJ and a DW account, neither of which I really use and rarely look at. I'm playing a waiting game right now to see what happens. If everyone leaves, then I suppose I will follow the crowd, but I hope it doesn't come to that. Following more than one journal is a major pain and I can't see myself doing that.

I found MRF through a recommendation, but I can't remember who it was. I've been watching it for at least two years, but only became a member when the current FB/T issues came up. For me, personally, the flocking would only encourage me to become a member so that I could see new posts. In fact, that's exactly what happened!

Like the others who have commented, I don't like the whole cross-posting business. On the other hand, I know that I first encountered MRF through a Yuletide Charioteer story: I think MRF must have been mentioned in the author's notes or something. I lurked for a bit, commented to Lorie on some of her fan fiction, and then got talking to her about the differences between the '53 and '59 editions. (I think she was a bit surprised to discover that anyone off MRF had realized there was a difference.) She promptly told me that the comm was about to start a CBC focused on precisely that point, and suggested I join.

My reservations about m-locking the community are based on my own experience. Although it is good that the back posts remain readable, that is particularly useful only for the fic archive. Trying to disentangle one of the CBCs after the fact is...well, difficult is putting it mildly. And I've been motivated! (Truth is, as you know, they can get in a twisty tangle even from the perspective of someone taking part ( ... )

The cross-posting issue doesn't bother me in the least. I don't belong to Twitter or Facebook, for a start, and while I wouldn't be happy if one of my posts got cross-posted to either, I don't see how it's a great inconvenience, or some sort of terrible evil. People could always link to your LJ posts, and often do. For example, Fandom Wank is one of the most popular communities going. They have untold thousands of members -- or did the last time I checked, which I must admit was some time ago. Mocking other people is one of Fandom's favourite pastimes. I think once Fandom discovers that cross-posting to Facebook or Twitter will increase their ability to humiliate others, we'll hear less about how evil the practice is ( ... )

You're right about this, and I don't feel you're coming down on me at all. I think these things should be discussed from all angles. I don't post anything sensitive in my LJ, because, no matter how much I might like to think it's my private journal, it's not. LJ is an entirely public medium, and though I can change the settings to make it seem private, something can always go wrong. But of course other people have different viewpoints on the subject. :-)))

I agree LJ shouldn't have made it so easy for people to cross-post their comments. I've always agreed with that argument. It's just that I see LJ, Facebook, Twitter, and all those other blogs and so on, as entirely public media. It's all out there in 'The Internets'. I don't see how anyone can claim some little corner of it as private, and safe. Actually, I don't think such a place really exists anywhere in the world. The world always catches up with you. :-)))

Indeed, this fb/twitter/lj business was a concern of mine, and my journal is flocked. I have moved to DW but continue to read lj as I would not like to lose contact with the comms that are over here.

If I found you today, I would not feel discouraged by the flocked entries when you explain why it is done, in your profile as well as in the final open post.

Thank you for being so considerate.
