Well, Carol's not really doing it out of rebellion. She's considered all her options at length and come to the decision she can do the most good where she is. She's ignoring her brother because she's stubborn but it's not about him telling her what to do or not do (I'm sure he HAS figured out no one can tell her what to do -- but that doesn't mean she doesn't listen, even if she doesn't respond or wouldn't show it exactly, it matters to her that he cares).
