Kitty moves faster when she's phased. She's already spiriting herself in a beeline towards the sound of gunfire. She slows cautiously as she gets a bit closer - she doesn't need to worry about making any noise, but she'd still rather see the potential threat before it sees her.

The sounds of screams and gunfire are rising as she approaches, and one of the soldiers is running from the swamp, ablaze, clutching his face. He drops to the ground and begins rolling madly in the dirt.

The others have their teeth gritted, firing at a mass before them that seems to not want to fall.

And then the monster comes into view. One SHIELD agent comes too close, and his and the monster's hands fall on him.

And what knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch.

From her position on the skimmer with Collosus, Jubilee is not sure if the thing that came out of the woods is a bad guy or a good guy. She does not want to use her piffs too soon, after all the bright flashes of fireworks would call attention to her and Collosus. She prepares a shot, and waits to see what Collosus will do, trusting in the instinct of the more trained X-Men.

Well now, this is an interesting situation to stumble upon. Nate hadn't expected SHIELD to be here, and most certainly didn't expect to find any members of one of the X-Teams there. He didn't even know which team they were from, either. X-Force? X-Statix? X-Tremeist? X-Box? Hell, he couldn't keep up with all these stupid X-teams that pop up everywhere. And whatever they were fighting was yet another surprise ( ... )

There's very little mind to read in the creature -- basically an animal, and a not particularly aggressive one, at that.

Brief images pass. Two children forced in front of the monster by frightened parents. An electrical shock permeating the creature's perceptions. The town center burning. A handsome blonde man smiling.

There's an arc of electricity coursing through what passes for the monster's nervous system. It wants very much to retreat into the swamp, but it can't. It's being controlled.

It's a pawn. Someone is just using the damn creature! And if there was any one thing that really got under Nate's skin, it was seeing someone being used.

Without giving it much more thought, Nate took off into the air, and move to a point where he was floating just a few feet above the creature.

"Back off! All of you!", he shouted down. To punctuate his point, he laid down a barrage of tk energy at the SHIELD agents and the X-men on the scene. None of his shots were lethal, any direct hit would feel like being tackled by an energetic twelve year old, but he needed to create some distance for the creature.

Jubilee was surprised by the new comer into the fight, but the man seemed to know what he was doing... and a little cute to boot. "You heard the man... drawback.." she herself scattered ot of the way. She was sure that Nate would do more than what she could

"Jesus. Who the hell is that?"

But Sitwell does as he's told.

"New formation! Pull the wounded back from the creature!"

He doesn't drop the gun, though.

With the men moving back, Nate finally had a good bit of room to work. To keep everyone else from interfering further, Nate placed a tk dome around himself and the Man-Thing.

Nate landed closer to the creature, and put his hands out. "Easy... easy... I'm not gonna hurt you."

Nate wished he could telepathically sedate the creature, but messing with a mind so simple and so differently structured compared to normal humans would do more harm than good, and that simple mind held information that Nate needed.

"Just take it easy..." Nate slowly moved closer. Whatever was shocking or prodding the creature, likely a device planted on it, he figured, he needed to find it. Which meant he needed to touch it. Which meant he was about to get burned, and he knew it.

He approached anyway.

Jubilee will help with getting the wounded back away from the creture, but is careful not to interfer wwith whatever nate is doing. It is all in his hands now, there is not much she can do. She looks around for her team mates, wondering where Shadowcat and Colossus are, and if they are okay.

Colossus, for his part, is finally emerging from the water, covered in a thick layer of sludge and grime.

He doesn't look particularly pleased.

Kitty looks moderately disgruntled. She's brushing herself off after being knocked down by this new guy's... telekinetic whatever-the-fuck that was. She glowers at him through the shield he's created for himself and the creature and heads towards her teammates. She joins Jubilee where the other girl is helping the casualties.

"Who's the martyr?" she asks, jerking a thumb back towards the guy in the telekinetic shield as she kneels beside an unconscious man.

"I figured he was with you," says Sitwell, seeing to his wounded men.

Jubilee watches Kitty and Piotr go off to talk to the SHIELD agents, she leans against a tree and looks at Nate Grey. He seems to be handling himself quite fine against the Swamp Monster, and she is not sure what she can to. But wait and watch.

The Man-Thing seems quieter now, almost docile. It watches those still around it, but seems to trust Nate somewhat.

Now that the agents have backed off, Nate drops the shield around them. He still wants to learn what he can about who did this from the Man-Thing, but it's not like the creature has much in the way of detailed memories. He could probably learn more by looking deeper, but that would mean subjecting the Man-Thing to even more trauma.

Nate felt bad for the creature, and with the shield finally down, the Man-Thing could leave, if it wanted to.

The device itself, now in Nate's hands, seems to have created an electrical simulation of fear in the creature, causing the Man-Thing to be aggressive, whenever it's triggered.

The beast itself has calmed, but it very much wants to run, to return to the swamp.

It looks at Nate, evidently knowing that the man has helped it -- a sort of primitive gratitude flashing across its thoughts.
