Reed did not watch the Daily Show. In fact, he watched very little television (though when Johnny and Ben were not around, he might confess to a small bit of interest in Mythbusters. Purely professional, of course), but he did have numerous tracking programs in place to alert him whenever Doom was mentioned.
When the program finished, he called up the Baxter Building's robotic receptionist, Roberta. "Roberta, when Col. Fury calls, tell him I'll meet with him at his earliest convenience."
"How do you know he'll be calling, Doctor Richards?"

Empire State University had a long and proud history. Besides producing several famous alumni that included scientists, politicians, economists and writers, it was common knowledge around NYC that the place was a hotbed of metahuman activity. Among others, both Reed Richards and Doctor Doom had been former students, although Doom had never graduated and actually left in a cloud of scandal. It was this last point that was the focus of the mass of student protestors who had marched tirelessly around campus

Empire State has some not-so-famous alumni as well - at least, not famous in the civilian sense. Peter Parker's covering the event for the Bugle, snapping photographs of the protesters and the man of the hour himself.
All the while, mystified by the purpose of the man's visit.
"All I ask is that you show the Latverian exchange students the same courtesy and respect you would show to any outsider. America has always claimed to be the model of morals for the world. Let us see you live up to that claim. There will be no further statements or questions
