Third times the charm

Scott hummed as he worked on making dinner. He'd relegated Cassie to simply doing the cutting. He loved her cooking but he knew it wasn't exactly to everyone's tastes. Or even most people's tastes. He intentionally didn't bring up the newspaper sitting on the table, turned to page A3.

Cassie noticed that but didn't mention it either. She was just going to enjoy the peace for as long as possible.

"Sure you don't want help with the rest of the cooking?"

"I'm sure honey," Scott smiled. "This is nice isn't it? Kind of like old times."

"Usually I wasn't the one holding the knife." Cassie smiled. Yup, she still wanted to cook.

"Well, you were younger then, and I couldn't trust you with as much," Scott agreed.

"It's not- I mean, I know it's not good but it's not like- I mean what else was I supposed to do?" She knew immediately after the words were out of her mouth that it was the wrong thing to say.

Scott nailed her with a glare but kept his voice nice and even. "What do you think you could have done otherwise?"

"Sat at home and done nothing?" Cassie replied weakly.

"Let's pretend you want to keep heroing, but know that you shouldn't for certain reasons, but you happen to have an awesome uncle who shouldn't have heroed for very similar reasons," Scott suggested.

Sharon was running a little late. She had gotten caught up in a mission debriefing by the team she was overseeing. A quick dash from the meeting to her quarters to get change and then a dash to her car. She managed to be only ten minutes late.

She knocked on the door.

Scott smiled, and answered it. "Sharon! Come on in." Great! He could stop being the mean dad and introduce his ladies to each other properly.

Scott was greeted with a smile and a kiss to his cheek. "Sorry I'm late. Got held up at work."

Scott kissed her back happily. "If we held it against each other every time we were late to a date because of work...Can I take your coat?"
