Hmm, did you install the proprietary driver for whatever card you have?

There's a tool called envy that might help:

I switched from Ubuntu to (Ubuntu-based) Mint a couple years ago, and for the most part have been very happy I did. There a few downsides, but things seem to "just work" more often.

I would like to but it appears my card is old enough that it's not supported by the proprietary driver (any longer?) I found a couple other people asking the same thing about the card, with negative responses.

Envy is now replaced by Jockey, which says there aren't any proprietary modules I can use--- alas.
