Ubuntu upgrade gripe

The Ubuntu upgrade process is pretty smooth... except for the parts that require user interaction. If it takes an hour to download and install new packages, I'm not going to sit around babysitting it. But instead of an upgraded system, I came back to find popup messages of the form "Hi, somebody gratuitously changed the contents of some ( Read more... )

This is the main complaint I have against .deb based systems. Packaging and configuration are separate operations and I really dislike that they're combined here.

Windows Update downloads had a similar irritant until recently, waiting until it was about to install the actual update and then popping up a EULA. And I run updates on a lot of computers, so it was a huge nuisance. I was very happy when they changed it--now everything that needs a EULA has it pop up at the beginning of the update process.

I am more concerned that the user interaction be batched than that it be eliminated altogether.

If I really _did_ make changes to some of those configuration files, I probably want to keep my changes. I just hate sitting around just in case there's a prompt.
