I like this post! I don't think I ever hated RPS - it just weirded me out before, but I shrugged and moved on. Fandom is fandom. There's always been a distinction b/w fiction (fan or not) and RL for me, even though some of my favorite fics are incredibly realistic. For me, it was harmless fun writing about fictionalized people based off real people, if it struck someone's fancy. It didn't strike my fancy before kpop (...okay except for a brief stint with jpop), and now it does. It's still fiction, if fed by "canon" irl events. Plus it's for fun - entertainment. I would never believe this is omgtru2life ( ... )

To be honest, I couldn't tell you now why I was so vehement about the hate. My brain just said "WRONG WRONG WRONG" without ever stopping to question.

Realistic is the word I was looking to use while writing this post. It kept eluding me for some reason.

Exactly! RPF is entertainment about my entertainment. :D

I definitely think the language barrier has a lot to do with me being less bothered by it. I made an entry about why EH fangirls have made me want to stay far, far away (explanation in the comments) because of how some of them have just crossed a line.

So I'm reading over the rest of the comments on this thread and was all "yes, ooh, good point, I agree" (particularly Sapphy's comment lol, yay meta), but then I got totally derailed. And you'll probably know why. Because now all I can say is:

;____________________; Donghae. ♥

I pretty much did the same thing. ♥ So many people with massive Donghae biases on my flist!

Oh how I love you for this post.

I admit I'm totally into fandom pairing. Mainly within Super Junior and SHINee. BUT I don't believe it's 'real'. If it really was, I have no idea how I'd react. It would be totally different thatn just imagining it.

I really loved what Yesung said. Despite it being slightly degrading, you got to see Jongwoon, not fail!Yesung who we all know and love. Same with Yoochun. They're real people, they're not perfect so of course they're going to do things we don't like.
The posts Leeteuk has been making on his Cyworld lately have been scaring me because again, it's who he really is. (I've totally lost his real name btw, wth.) Not his mask that is Teukie.

I find it funny thought that I read less fanfic about my kpop fandom than I ever did Tokio Hotel fanfic. And that was focused on incest. I really can't believe I ever was ok with THAT.

I'm gonna go with "I wouldn't care beyond being worried for their careers and lives (not physically, more mentally and emotionally) because Korea would just go 'OH HELL NO.'"

It was degrading, and I'm not suggesting we make excuses for it. Same with Yoochun. But it was honest, and while I may not approve, I can respect the honesty for what it was.

bb seems very unhappy, and this makes me sad. (And lol, it happens. His real name is Jungsoo/Jungsu.)

Again, it's fic. There's a lot I'm cool with reading ficwise, incest included. So long as it's written well, at least.

"Second answer is the most obvious one of all: it's FIC. I have yet to come across an author I truly enjoy who thinks otherwise. I cringe whenever I see people squee about how Jaeho or Yoosu or Hanchul or whoever is real and the girlfriends are just a ploy and waah, Korea's so homophobic, they're in LOVE why can't they just BE TOGETHER~~~. Because no. They're good friends who happen to be in an industry where they're taught to be insanely close to each other to get the reactions so many people give them (see above.) Yeah, I joke that ShiHan is married, but really, no. Just no. Maybe it makes me a hypocrite (because I squee over the fanservice too, I won't even pretend I don't,) and like to write stories about how their friendship could be more than that ( ... )

Well duh I still fantasize over marrying Yunho one day, and I don't like gays.

Okay, not trying to jump down your throat here or anything, but--gay rights supporter and open bisexual, here. I can't tell you how to feel, but that comment kind of stings. :/

Idk, but personally I find it a little hard to write about who they really are unless you really know them. I mean, I've tried playing on the little bits about them like how Yoochun can play the piano, or Jae likes to cook and Yunho likes to read/write, but (for me) I find it hard to write without a little deviation. *shrug* I just write for fun.

Oh, I'm all for including bits of what we know about them. I'm not saying never include those bits. I'm just saying there's more to these people than the bits we know, and so deviation is not only fun, but necessary.

Aish I'm so sorry, don't get me wrong. I didn't mean it to sound like that! ): Let me rephrase. I meant that I'm not fond of the idea, but I have nothing against the people who practice it. Omg I'm so sorry, I had no idea I sounded so tactless ):

I don't for a second think that every glimpse we get into their personal lives is necessarily who they are.

Totally agreed. Give me fanservice over a documentary any day. :)

As for the Yesung debacle - I do understand why some people were upset. I feel like it's not in my place to specify the conditions in which people can be offended, esp. with a touchy subject like weight... But I also wish Kpop fans would realize that Korean culture is not as progressive as they may be used to, and these foot-in-mouth comments are to be expected. A lot. T_T

And really that's what I was trying to say. Not "Oh, stop being upset,"--it was a hurtful comment especially from a more progressive standpoint, but more exactly what you said--at this point such comments aren't really surprising.
