Heart rates and trail logs

This morning I had my one-year surgery followup doctor's appointment. My actual "surgiversary" is Friday (July 16) so I'll probably make a more extensive post then with a nice official one-year photo. I've got an Android phone, and CardioTrainer is pretty good - it uses the GPS in your phone to map where you're moving (and your overall speed, with audio updates on a timeline you set). The map wouldn't be terribly clear because it overlays with Google Maps, which don't have trail lines on it - but it would at least map how far and how fast you went, etc. It uploads your workouts to their webpage but I've never played with the webpage much.

I don't know if you have a smartphone at all or if anything similiar exists for iPhones, etc.

I have a Droid too, but I wouldn't trust that GPS for hiking. It NEVER has me where I actually am, like within half a mile, when I'm in the car.

It works really well for walking around my neighborhood within Cardiotrainer - it's a free app, so I'd encourage you to give it a try. It's perfectly accurate walking around my neighborhood, etc.

My other problem is that a lot of places I hike, there's no cell reception and no GPS signal to the phone.

My husband has this watch that has a GPS system inside. At the end of his runs he can download the data and it maps out his path running area. I think it is a Garmin product and he loves it.

Hate to say it, but my GPS made my trail runs so awesome for the DATA!! I am all about the data now. Before it was tricky to guesstimate my exact paths and mileage. Now, with my Garmin, I can upload the data to the Garmin site (and other devices allow you to upload to just your computer) and I can play with it in so many ways. Total miles, speed, avg speed, mile splits, weekly, monthly, yearly totals... if you have an accompanying heart rate monitor, you can measure and record even more information.

Of course, these devices are expensive. Mine was a birthday gift last year. We wondered whether it would be worth it in the end, and for me, using at least 5 days a week and being able to track progress, see patterns, keep notes, etc... it totally is.

My boyfriend and I have had a GPS for a couple months now. Besides being able to geotag his photos, it is fantastic for noting how long you've gone (ie minutes/hours), how much further it is to your destination, altitude, etc.

Nike Run has an amazing website for stuff like this. My husband tracks all of his runs and has mentioned walkers that are on the message boards. It'll give you breakdowns of your pacing and I think maybe even elevation? Though I'm not so sure about that. You can compete for "medals" and join challenges. There are a ton of really super buff people on it, but beginners too. And you can avoid the advanced crowd if you like. Here comes the part where I'm useless though. You have to have the Nike Run to monitor your usage and upload your data, and I don't know what the website is. I'm sure that's included with the chip though. There are also third party companies that make little pouches you can attch to the outside of your shoes so you don't have to have Nikes. It might be worth a looksie at the very least.
