Ryosuke couldn't believe how nervous he was right now.
His heart just kept pounding so much.
He really just wanted to step back and go home.
He stared right at their door.
He had been standing there for a while now, unmoving.
He really couldn't do it.
Should he really just go back now?
But he was already here.
And he had been waiting for this day since forever.
But his nerves...
Marching up all his courage, Ryosuke had raised his hand to knock, but before his knuckles could touch the door, it flew opened.
"Nii-chan!" Miyuu, with a pleasantly surprised face welcomed him.
He couldn't believe it, but his heart started quickening its pace.
"Miyuu..." He breathed.
"Come in, come in." Miyuu said, pulling him inside their house.
"Go
sit first." She said as she lead him in their living room. "I'll go get Nee-chan. She just got back from her new drama. Maybe she's sleeping now but I'll just wake her up--"
She was about to go when Ryosuke called her. "Miyuu-chan, wait!"
Miyuu looked back in question.
"Uhm, I'm not here for your neechan... Er, is your dad here?" Ryosuke said.
Miyuu stared at him for a few seconds, her face blank.
And then slowly, a smile crept on her face.
"Yes." She breathed. "Yes, dad is here. Sit first, Ryo-nii. I'll call him at once." She said, beaming at him.
Ryosuke nodded and clumsily sat down their sofa.
He could feel his legs go weak.
He felt as if he was waiting for the whole day already but looking at his watch, it hasn't even been a minute since Miyuu left.
After a little while, he heard them coming back. Two sets of footsteps.
Ryosuke felt as if his heart just stopped beating. He closed his eyes and tried to calm his nerves.
When he opened them, they were already in the living room.
He hastily stood up and bowed to Shida-san.
Shida-san smiled at him a little hesitantly and bowed in return.
Shida-san gestured for Ryosuke to sit down and they both did.
"Well, I'll leave you two then." Miyuu announced, looking at Ryosuke and winking and then looking at her dad sternly as if warning him.
There was a tense silence as both men watched the young woman leave the living room.
Shida-san then turned his head to Ryosuke.
Ryosuke inwardly gulped. This was it.
"So, Ryosuke, to what do I owe this visit?" He said kindly.
Ryosuke felt as if Shida-san was already expecting this visit, but this only made him more nervous.
"Sir," Ryosuke started, but his voice cracked and he cleared his throat.
Shida-san waited. Ryosuke noted that now Shida-san didn't correct him. He had always asked Ryosuke to just call him by his name but now... Now Ryosuke was sure Shida-san knew why he was here.
He started again. "Sir, I'm a bit nervous 'bout being here today. I'm still not real sure what I'm going to say so bare with me please if I take up too much of your time." He said politely.
Shida-san stifly nodded.
It was going smoothly, Ryosuke tried to convince himself. Subtly heaving a sigh, he took something from his pocket and showed it to Shida-san.
He frowned at the sight of it. Ryosuke tried not to be deterred.
"See in this box is a ring for your oldest..." Ryosuke said in a small voice.
Shida-san didn't say anything so Ryosuke continued. "She's my everything and all that I know is it would be such a relief if I knew that we were on the same side."
Shida-san looked at Ryosuke like he was sizing him up.
Ryosuke waited.
Finally, Shida-san spoke.
"Actually, I've been waiting for this visit since you two turned twenty-four..." He said, with an expressionless voice.
Ryosuke tried to smile. "Yes... I wanted to make her dream come true... I'm really sorry I'm a year late. But it has been complicated."
Shida-san quietly nodded.
"Of course." He said. "The careers you both chose makes everything more complicated. And it would be more complicated in the future..."
"I'm ready for that, sir." Ryosuke said, seriously.
"Are you?" He asked, looking at him sternly.
Ryosuke remembered that day when rumors about them started spreading.
Someone had seen them together during their field trip in their last year in Horikoshi.
Someone was able to take a picture of them by the lake.
But they were with other friends so it didn't made much commotion.
And then that time they were seen in a park together with just the two of them. Fortunately, they had another excused then as the park was just by Kanagawa High School, where both their little sisters were attending.
As time went, as both of them continued to do well in each career, more and more rumors about them spread, each giving more bigger impact than the last.
Each time Ryosuke was so very afraid that they would be found out. That they would be revealed.
That everything would end.
But they had been able to avoid that, deny their relationship even if they didn't want to; until that day.
That day when it all finally went out. And it was all because of Ryosuke's own recklessness.
It was their fifth anniversary. It was their, to give a word, 'coldest' year.
Both of them has rarely seen each other all year as both of them were very busy with their own works. They barely had time for themselves, least for each other.
And what hurts the most was that it was as if they don't really care that that was the case. It was as if they just
accept that that was the way it is... as if they weren't bothered that they don't even know what's happening about each other anymore.
This struck Ryosuke when he almost forgot about their anniversary.
Suddenly, he realized that he missed Mirai so much it hurts.
Ryosuke had called Mirai at once at this, even though he was in the middle of his work. But it was to hear the answering machine.
Feeling irrationally hurt and frustrated at this, he had left the location without preamble and went straight to where Chie-san had said Mirai was.
Mirai was very surprised to him there.
Now that Ryosuke think back on it, he couldn't really blame Mirai for suddenly trying to shove him out. Their relationship were only known to very close friends and their families. But just then he felt very very angry.
He had missed her, hadn't seen her for months and months and then suddenly it was as if she didn't want to see him.
He felt rejected.
He tried talking to her that night again but it was to be welcomed by an angry Mirai.
Someone had seen them, she said, they had taken a clear picture of them.
"Why did you go there?! Now everything's a mess!" She had shouted at him. He should have known Mirai was just stressed then.
They had a row. They had shouted in front of Mirai's front door.
"Let's end it then! So all your problems will end!" Ryosuke had said, not really thinking.
Mirai stopped at this, looking, glaring at him.
"Fine then." She said, coldly, though Ryosuke could see hurt in her eyes.
And then she went inside their house and closed the door on him. He had heard a sob as the door closed.
He felt weak right after that.
He didn't quite know how he got there, but next thing he knew, he was already in the bar, drinking, and with Yuma asking him what happened.
It was a blur but he remembered Yuma trying to talk him into going home. He didn't heed him. And as a last resort, Yuma had called Mirai for help. Well, that must have been what happened since Mirai herself had come to the place.
He remembered immediately going and embracing Mirai when he saw her.
"I love you Mirai, please don't leave me. I can't... I don't even wanna think about it... I love you so much..." He had told her this repeatedly, never letting go of her.
They had made their way out the bar, swaying, and with Mirai guiding him. Outside was Yuma with his car, waiting for them.
Even as they got on the car, Ryosuke still wasn't ceasing with his litany.
"I won't leave you..." Mirai finally said.
Ryosuke still held her, but he stopped talking. He slowly fell asleep, his head lying on Mirai's lap. He could feel her caressing his head.
"You're such a baby..." He heard her say. He had smiled at that.
"Happy Anniversary Ryosuke..." He last heard as he slipped into unconsciousness
Right at the next day, news and pictures of them went out the tabloids. Pictures of them in Mirai's set and pictures of them in the bar.
They couldn't really deny it anymore, and they didn't really want to, and so with both their agency's permission, they had set up a press conference.
Ryosuke smiled at the memory and then he looked straight at Shida-san.
"I'm scared to death to think of what would happen if she ever left so don't ever worry about me ever treating her bad or giving up on us." He said sincerely.
'I've got most of my vows done so far so bring on the better or worse and till death do us part.' He thought. And it was true. They've been together for so long now. They've been through all sorts of things, even things normal couple wouldn't experience. He had a taste of how his life would be with Mirai. It would be very hard, he was sure, but he can't even stop to imagine life without her. But he didn't really wanna say these words outloud. He didn't know how Shida-san would react to that.
"There's no doubt in my mind that it's time. I'm ready. We're both ready." Ryosuke said instead.
Flashes of everything they've been through entered Ryosuke's mind. Ever since day one. Ever since that first meeting during TGQ SP cast meeting.
Since day one, it has been an adventure for the both of them.
Ryosuke didn't really meet Mirai in the cast meeting itself, but rather in the train.
She was alone while Ryosuke was with her mom.
He had recognized her at once, even with her disguise. He was staring at her, though he didn't realize til his mom asked him what's the matter.
He had pointed at her then and told his mom that it was Shida Mirai.
As he said it, the train suddenly stopped with a jolt, and his mom had grabbed hold of him.
He looked at Mirai after the sudden break and saw that she had managed to grabbed onto the chair.
The train announced then that there was a problem and that it would take a while before the train could move again.
When he looked back at her, he was surprised to see her crying.
Not really knowing what he was doing, he had made his way towards her.
"Shida-san?"
She blinked and then looked at him and his mom who had followed him.
"Are you okay, dear?" His mom asked.
She silently nodded and hastily wiped her tears.
"What's wrong?" Ryosuke asked.
"I... I'm late..." she said.
Ryosuke looked at his watch and surely, it was only ten minutes before the meeting.
Ryosuke looked at his mom.
His mom, understanding, took out her phone and called his manager at once.
"It'll be okay..." Ryosuke told Mirai as he sat next to her, patting her rather awkwardly on the back.
There was a new feeling taking over Ryosuke. He didn't want her to cry. There was a sort of protectiveness towards the almost stranger girl that he couldn't suppress.
"It's okay, dear. They said they will wait. They understand the situation." Ryosuke's mom told Mirai.
Mirai nodded, looking as if she still wanted to cry.
"Don't cry..." Ryosuke said worriedly.
Mirai nodded again, but now managing a teary smile.
Ryosuke couldn't help but smile as well.
'The first time I saw her I swear I knew that I say I do.'
But that was the only time he had seen her like that.
During their work, their TGQ SP, they had been friends. And quite close at that. She was very boyish, very tough. It was as if she was ashamed that he saw a weak side of her and she was determined not to show that
side again.
She was a strong girl. She was very independent and very mature. He had always admired this. But he wished she could be a bit more comfortable around him. That she could also show him more of his girl side.
It was sad when they had to say goodbye in that last day of filming. And he didn't know why but Mirai was acting cold. They never really said their goodbyes properly.
When he had known about the renzoku, and that most of the cast remained, he was very pleased. They would be working together again. He hadn't seen her for months and so he was very excited.
He was surprised to see that her hair had grown.
He told her so, teasing her of finally becoming a "girl." She retorted by saying he looked more like a girl than her. Well, she had a point, his hair had grown so much as well.
They became closer during this filming. They were more comfortable with each other now. She told him he and Kamiki was her best friends.
On the last day of filming, Ryosuke abashedly gave her a present, a stuffed hippo. He had heard she loves stuff toys. She was very surprised and pleased at this, and she named the stuffed hippo 'Yama- chan'. Kamiki also gave her a present, a small Mickey Mouse plushie. And that was when Mirai started calling him 'Miki.
"Since your gift already have a name, then I'll give you a nickname instead!" she explained.
He expected it, but he was still very happy to hear that they would be attending the same high school and would be in the same class.
But something changed in them somewhat. And Mirai became distant.
Ryosuke couldn't really remember much moments together during their first year.
The same year, Mariya had confessed to him.
She had pleaded for them to try. Hesitantly, he agreed.
They went out for a while. But they mutually broke up after some months. It just didn't work. Ryosuke didn't feel the same for Mariya, and Mariya knew this.
After that, they couldn't even return to being friends. Mariya tried, Rysouke knew but it was just too awkward. And in the next semester, Mariya transfered schools.
The class went back to how it was before the whole affair, though of course they did miss Mariya.
The class grew closer as the year went by.
But oddly, it seemed to Ryosuke that Mirai was more distant to him than ever.
They would talk, they would laugh together, eat together, hang out together, but they were always surrounded by all their other friends during these times. And when they were gone, Mirai would suddenly act
reserved again.
This went on til their second year. Ryosuke didn't really like this, but he didn't really know what to do or if he
could do something about it.
It was frustrating for Ryosuke.
And even more so when he realized how Mirai and Yuto had became close. He always seen them studying together; alone or sometimes with Chii and Suzuka.
What's most frustrating though was when one day he saw Mirai make her way towards Yuto and gave him a ring and showed him hers.
She had brought them matching rings.
This bothered Ryosuke very much but he didn't know why.
He decided to talk to Yuto on their way home.
The first thing he noticed as they got on the train was that Yuto wasn't wearing any ring.
"Where's your ring?" He had said, not really thinking.
Yuto blinked at him then and then pouted.
He took something from his pocket. The ring.
"Here..." He said, rather sadly. "But Yama-chan, how did you know?"
"I saw Mirai give it to you earlier..." Ryosuke said.
"Ahh..." Yuto said nodding.
They were silent for a while.
"Are you dating?" Ryosuke asked out of nowhere.
Yuto blushed.
Ryosuke felt very angry then. He didn't know why, but he felt betrayed.
"Just last week." Yuto said.
"Ah." Ryosuke said coldly.
Yuto smiled, looking at the ring. "I accidentally confessed to her during the sports meet." He said.
Ryosuke didn't want to hear this but Yuto kept talking.
"She didn't react at once. Well, we were both shocked that I said it out of the blue but then Mirai started laughing and it was as if a switch was turned on and both me and Suzu-chan started blushing like mad." He said with a laugh.
Ryosuke blinked. "Wait, Suzu-chan?"
Yuto looked at him.
"Suzu-chan what?" He asked.
"You're going out with Suzu-chan?" Ryosuke asked.
A tinge of pink was coloring Yuto's cheeks. "I told you, yes..."
"But Mirai... she's wearing the same ring...?"
"Oh, that. Mirai bought two pairs. She said it would be a good cover. If Suzu-chan was asked, she'd just say it was her friendship ring with Mirai-chan. But that wasn't really necessary since the ring is too small for me. It won't fit. Maybe I'll just wear it as a pendant or something." Yuto babbled on.
"So there's a fourth ring?" Ryosuke asked, distracted.
Yuto stopped talking and looked at him, smiling knowingly. "Hai, Yama-chan. Mirai have it. Might be saving it for someone..."
''I want to have that ring.' Was Ryosuke's first thought at the information. This was when he realized that he liked Mirai.
For the next few months, Ryosuke tried very hard so that they could be close again. And somehow by the end of the year, they had gone back to how they were in TGQ.
And on their last day as second years, he finally said it.
"Do you still have the other ring?" He asked her during their study period.
"Ring?" Mirai asked, looking up from her notes, a bit distracted.
Ryosuke pointed at her pinky, where she wore her ring. "It has a pair, right?"
"Oh." Mirai said, concentration now fully on Ryosuke. "Ah, hai. I bought two pairs, one for Suzu- chan and Yuto and this one for a cover, just in case..." She said.
"Un. Yuto told me. But do you still have the other one?" He asked again.
"Hai.. it's at home. Why?" Mirai asked.
"Can I have it?" Ryosuke said.
Mirai looked at him for a while, "I don't think you need to cover for Yuto. He's wearing his as a pendant and he takes it off during your photoshoots..."
"No, not to cover Yuto... I..." Ryosuke blushed. "I just want to have... this one's pair." He said pointing at the ring again.
Mirai looked at him more closely. He looked away.
"It's okay if you don't want to give it to me..." Ryosuke said hastily.
Mirai was quiet for a while.
"Actually... I want to give it to you. I'm just wondering why you want it... If ever it's the same reason I want to give it to you..." She said the last sentence in barely a whisper.
And Ryosuke just found himself saying, "It's cause I love you, Mirai."
That was the turning point. And more adventures came from then on.
Ryosuke felt a bit old thinking about all this.
He remembered their first date. It was in Disneyland and they were with their friends. So many things happened then. So many times they were almost caught.
He remembered Yuto and Chinen walking far off by the lake in their last field trip as high school, leaving the two of them under the big oak tree.
They were just sitting there, talking about Mirai's new drama and Ryosuke's voice acting role.
Mirai had leaned on his shoulders then.
He didn't know how it quite happened, but they shared their first kiss there.
During their graduation, the girls were all crying. All except for Mirai. She was smiling, though with sad eyes. She caught his glance. She smiled at him determinedly.
The concert during his birthday, Mirai surprised him backstaged.
Their second drama together; though awkwarldy as step-siblings.
Mirai's birthday the next year. Their one day getaway abroad.
Their first Sakura viewing...
The day Mirai introduced him to her family.
The first Christmas with their families together...
"I'm hoping that soon I can marry your daughter and make her my wife. I want her to be the only girl that I love for the rest of my life and give her the best of me 'till the day that I die." Ryosuke said firmly.
Shida-san looked at him, long and hard.
Ryosuke waited, nervously.
And then suddenly the door to the living room opened and Miyuu came in carrying some drinks.
"I brought juice." She cheerily said and went on and laid the glasses on the table.
"Thank you." Ryosuke said softly, his voice cracking. Seriously, his nerves are eating him up.
"Just call me when you need anything else." Miyuu said to both of them and then she left the room just as quickly.
The air was more awkward than ever.
Ryosuke took a sip from his juice.
Shida-san slowly took his glass and took a sip as well.
Ryosuke watched him, still waiting.
Finally, Shida-san looked at him and then sighed.
"You know, Ryosuke, before we had Mirai, I never really wished for a daughter. I've always wanted a son." Shida-san said, looking at a picture of Mirai on the table.
"So when the doctor said it was a girl, I didn't know what to do... I didn't know what to do with a daughter. I've always imagined myself with a son."
Ryosuke smiled at this.
"But when I saw her, I knew at once that I love her so much. And then it came to me that this day will come. Believe it or not, I've dreaded this day since the first time I saw her. Dreaded it more so when she first confessed she had a crush on you back when you were in your first work together..."
Ryosuke looked at Shida-san at this, surprised. He never knew that.
"She's my precious daughter. My princess." Shida-san said.
I'm gonna marry your princess and make her my queen. She'll be the most beautiful bride that I've ever seen.
They were quiet for a while. Shida-san seems to be lost to his memories. Ryosuke patiently waited.
Finally, he looked at Ryosuke.
"Do you love my daughter?" He asked.
"Yes," Ryosuke said. "Very much so."
Shida-san smiled. And Ryosuke felt so relieved.
"Remeber that, especially during hard times."
Ryosuke beamed at him.
"Hai." He said firmly. "Arigatou, Shida-san."
He nodded at him, and now chuckled. "Ryosuke, you really should stop calling me Shida-san. Especially now."
Ryosuke smiled sheepishly. "Hai..."
"Oh, and by the way..." Shida-san said.
Ryosuke looked up at him.
"Don't make promises you can't keep." He said, rather sternly.
Ryosuke was bewildered but Shida-san continued to talk.
"I also promise to Mirai's mom that she will always be the only woman in my life. I broke that promise just a year after I said it. When Mirai was born and then two years after that, Miyuu..." He said with a smile.
Ryosuke smiled back.
For the second time, the door to the living room opened again, and now to reveal a sleepy Mirai.
"Ryosuke, what are you doing here?" She asked when she saw him. "And what's this about? Miyuu just suddenly jumped on me in my bed saying I need to go down. Almost gave me a heart attack."
She looked at Ryosuke and her father in question.
Ryosuke looked at Shida-san.
Shida-san nodded.
Ryosuke turned to Mirai.
"Actually..."
I can't wait to smile as she walks down the isle on the arm of her father on the day that I marry your daughter.
