In God We Trust

It came up else where, and didn't feel it right to place this as response there. The video to which I am responding to can be found HereThis is only a small, incomplete response, since the whole thing would be a book if I were to argue every point I found wrong in this video (oh and the anti education glib at the end made me fume for a few 3 ( Read more... )

Well, there you go.....I believe in American exceptionalism, historically, it is not an elitist position, it's just a fact. Since we have different philosophies, we could argue and debate forever and never agree. Heck if you are happy with what you believe that's all that's important.

I really enjoy the quotes you come up with, I sure a few of the first 19 presidents would be surprised to learn they weren't Christians. It's really interesting to compare histories and biographies that were written a hundred years ago to stuff that's been written in the past, oh say 40 years.

Jefferson is the wrong person to quote to me (I know you weren't only addressing me) a strong supporter of the French revolution, a life long slave holder, among other things, but it just depends on who you read, and the quotes you use :D.

The Christian union of 1880 is not the last 40 years, and they said that the Presidents were not Christians (probably because many were either Deist or Unitarians) ;)

After reading a great deal of Paine and some of Jefferson, I really don't buy the they were really Christians stuff. Choose to believe as you wish, but I really do think that the scholarship backs my position.

But as you say we could go round and round.

Then again, I do hold a college degree and that means I'm not really an American with American values according to the video :P

I'm too tired and too busy to do much tonight (altho it is nice to be working again) but I would have felt bad if I hadn't commented at all :D

His point on colleges was just in brief.....I have heard hours of debate between him and professional educators and others expounding on his views of a college education. I have also read Sowell and Horowitz among others on the state of colleges today, and their points are well made, but it is a whole topic all in itself.

Well Paine for sure...Jefferson was a little bit of everything at different times of his life.....kinda like you ;)

I really have to go....latter

The Christian Union was started by a Campbell, the Campbellites were were known as "Christians only" James A Garfield, the Republican candidate was the first Christian (that is Campbellite) candidate. So while I don't doubt that they said it, from the little research I did on Remsburg explains why it was used in the context that the first 19 Presidents weren't Christians.....again I say much to the surprise of the Episcopalians and Prespyterians (among others, I can't find a list of who claimed what) who probably thot they were Christians too. (Anything you might want to know about the Campbellites, you can call (or email) Mark. Like me it's what he grew up in ( ... )
