There’s another year long meme but I didn’t like the first question so I thought I’d do the car meme I saw some people do.

I didn’t drive when I lived in Philadelphia. I took the subway or a bus and it was fine. Except in winter when you’re waiting, waiting for the bus. We lived in a row house, there was no parking anyway. Even though I’ve been on ( Read more... )

I married a Philadelphian in 1954 and have lived here in row houses almost all the time since January 1955, when Walter got out of the Air Force. The first house we owned was new construction (in 1958), and instead of having a back alley running parallel to the street that the garage opened up into, these houses had a basement level garage with the garage door facing the street. We lived right on the Broad St bus line so it was easy to make connections to other buses. Took a long time but reliable. And we were halfway between two subway stops. It was a walk to get there but it was the way life was and it was good enough.

When I was old enough I used to get the subway to City Hall and walk down the Parkway to the Museum. And try not to get run over.

I learned on a manual, but I don't think I could manage now. I'm too spoiled by automatics.
