There's no way to get a lighter color without bleaching. The Mix & Go product probably has some bleach in it, I'd guess.
As for whether you'd destroy your hair bleaching it yourself, it really depends on a lot. The lighter you make it, obviously, the harder bleaching is on your hair. It also depends on how think individual hairs are, and how much damage your hair already has, and a million other things. My girlfriend bleaches her own hair; I pay someone to do mine.
Professional price depends on how long your hair is now. I paid $300 when my hair was waist-length, though it's only about $100 now.
