Avengers Assemble!

While the Next Big Event in the Marvel Universe is underway, with the usual parade of spinoff and variants (making me think somebody suddenly forgot about the crisis in the '90s and how it started), one has to thank the guys at Activision and Raven Software for Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

I was a bit late in picking up the game (this one made it to ( Read more... )

LUCHE! :D

The graphics for Ultimate Alliance are crisp and beautiful in HD! And the downloadable content is awesome but people who buy Ultimate Alliance Gold get it all for free at the same price we paid for the original. That's a little dirty!

Anyway, the extras, in-jokes and Easter Eggs provide all kinds of candy for Marvel fans of every stripe. A welcome present to every True Believer!

By the way, have you tried the Justice League game? It's like Ultimate Alliance for ages 3-7. No comparison with UA!

I avoided the JLA game like the plague. I do like several things DC's done through recent years: Diana's reboot as it was orchestrated by Perez and Byrne, Jeph Loeb's run on Superman/Batman, most of Miller's stuff, "Formerly known as the Justice League"... and again, Wally as Flash, Power Girl rising back to prominence and ultimately Hal returning as a hero, fixing that horrid Paradox conundrum.

However, that game isn't just for me. I've seen it at play, and it lacks the fine balance that MUA displays even in the tamer versions (I currently own the PS2 release).

Plus, like I said, they've got the Surfer. And Deadpool, who has one of the most useful sets of moves and keeps spouting nonsense all over the place, true to his estabilished personality.

I love the Super-Buddies! <3 The storyline where Max Lord turned out to be some kind of Machiavellian schemer and all that, that was ridiculous, as were the storylines which had no other purpose than systematically eliminating any trace of the JLI. In fact, Infinite Crisis as a whole was completely ridiculous!

I do like that they made Power Girl sort of cool again (at least as much as DC is capable of acknowleding the coolness of a female that isn't Wonder Woman, their heavily leveraged intellectual property). I have no problem fixing the whole 'Parallax' thing but I think Hal Jordan's journey from villain back to hero makes more sense than the whole 'Space Bug' plot. Blargh!

Anything by Geoff Johns is still good though. Like Titans! Johns is single-handedly keeping DC from falling into the muck single-handedly. It's a lot to take on by oneself.
