Don is pretty sure he hasn't slept in three days. But that doesn't matter now. All that matters is the barrier ahead of him, the invention strapped to his shell, and whether the one will allow him and Raphael to pass through the other.
Steal OUR brother, will you.
The thought kept him going 'til sunrise, and since then it's just been the blind rhythm of a cross-country run, as the glaring sun beats down from ever-higher angles and the miles slip away beneath his feet.
He figures it's about noon when they come over the last rise, and there, below them, so weirdly reflective he has to look twice to be sure it's not just heat-haze, is the barrier.
Don drops to the ground, against the back of the hill. He's not sure what he's hiding from, but hiding has always been the default for him and five months of living in the open haven't erased the instinct to get out of sight.
From his concealed position, he surveys what lies ahead of him. It's the first time he's been to the barrier - and, with luck, it will also be the last. He's not going back to the village, to be sent home at the leisure of some insane scientists.
I'll do the science here today. Home or bust.
