How have you tried tofu? I know how it's cooked makes a huge difference. I quite like it fried, or mashed with spicy stuff and sauteed, or pressed and dry-fried. (Dry-frying is where you cut the tofu into thin strips and let them cook in a dry pan. It makes something very firm and chewy.)

I had firm tofu cut into steak-like things, fried, covered in sesame seeds. I suffer from the problem of not liking spicy things, but finding that technique exceptionally bland.

Tricky. I love spicy things, so that's my main approach with tofu. I haven't put seeds all over it. That seems like it'd be weird.

A marinade might make a difference? Especially a savory one, with soy sauce or something? I have a tofu press, so I can press and marinade at the same time.

I tried one of those croissant-donut things today. It was kind of overrated (at least the Vietnamese knockoff version - I've never been to that one spot in New York), but fairly nice.

Yes, that was my next plan :D

I don't think I've heard of croissant-donut things. o_O

I'm going to try pancetta for lunch today! And sweet potato soup tomorrow - I know I really like them but I've never had them in a soup. :) Never tried fennel or tofu or kale, but I also hate liquorice!

Pancetta is *lovely*. Also, ooh, that sounds like a nice soup. I never used to really like soups before this year, but now I found some recipes for rich, thick soups, I am a fan.

I am glad I'm not the only licorice hater. :D

gooseberries and fish, not at the same time

Was it a particular fish/fish dish or were their dietary reasons for you not having fish before?

Also, I used to love gooseberries as a child.

I had kippers as a child and HATED them. Never ate fish again until my mid-thirties when Matt persuaded me to try some at a restaurant. Delicious! I felt a fool.

Also really hated gooseberries as a child but last year I decided to grow up and just learn to like them, which I now do.

Still hate pears though!

It's fun to wake up to quite a few posts to read.

I like fennel and kale. Actually, I love the entire dark leafy green family. The South introduced me to collards and I love them too.

As to tofu, I'm not keen on the texture, so tend to only eat it in soups and the barbecued version.

I'm a very adventurous eater and cook and I'm trying hard but I can't think of the last new food I ate.

I haven't had collards. Can't say I've seen them. I was lucky to get kale!

I've never seen collards outside of the American South so that doesn't surprise me. *g*

I love kale. Up until recently, I thought of it as purely ornamental vegetation, but it is my favorite edible leafy green thing now.

I guess the newest thing for me is kohlrabi. I don't know if I have completely accepted it on my edible list.

Kale is surprisingly awesome :D

What does kohlrabi taste like?

Maybe the closest comparison is a broccoli stem. Now that I've typed that, I am thinking that broccoli stems don't always make my edible list.
