How Your Fanfic Sausage is Made

Okay, so here's the thing. The last story I posted, (All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues) is one that I have a lot of feelings about. It is also one that I spent a lot of time with -- I got up every morning for about three weeks and chipped away at it and chipped away at it. So now I find myself in this weird state of mind where it's all done ( Read more... )

I love hearing about how people write. This was really interesting to me; I wondered several times during the story whether you knew someone who had been in this situation, because I talk to a lot of adults dealing with parents who have dementia or Alzheimer's, and you captured it so well.

have only seen three episodes of Lost. So everything I know of Ben is from you.

(For the record: Ben copied that page, highlighted the section where Blaine is mentioned, then framed it. It's on the desk in his office, along with a picture of Ben asleep on The Couch, with baby Blaine fast asleep on his chest, clutching his shirt. Because Ben is a softie like that, even if he thinks he needs to hide it.) I am now obsessed with the idea of Blaine seeing this picture and all the resulting awesome bonding.

It's probably worth noting that my mother is a nurse with a specialization in Gerontology -- she spent most of my childhood working in an inpatient care facility, and now does at-home care for one of the local Hospice programs. So while my personal experiences with Alzheimer's have been relatively glancing (my great-aunt died of it when I was very young, but we didn't see her much and I really don't remember anything about it), it was definitely more present in my home growing up than it would have been had my mother chosen a different career path.

I want to write the fic where Blaine discovers that picture, too. I just can't quite figure out how.
