Marcello's eyes would've burst open at the shovel's clatter, but they were too swollen and sore for that much activity and instead he yelped and hissed a little. He sat up and dared to rub them a little with a soft groan, consciousness ebbing its way back into him gradually.

He looked up finally, to see the Swede staring at him with that face of his. Normally, it wouldn't faze the man, but being unprepared for it he couldn't help just jump a little.

"Maestro..." He couldn't think of what to say, although he was already trying to formulate a series of explanations in his head. "..hi."

Berwald stared at Marcello for a moment longer, too shocked by what he saw to move, and then he fell on his knees. The intense stare probably wasn't any more comfiting from close up, but Berwald himself was too worried to remember how people tended to react to his face. He scanned him up and down, noting the bruises on his face and the scuffed and dirty clothes...

"Are you..." his gaze fixed back on Marcello's face. "What happened, are you badly hurt? Should I call a doctor?" he asked, firing off the questions in a clipped, tense tone, before glancing around. "We have th' first aid kit here too..." he got up to get it, before hesitating when he realized Marcello hadn't yet answered any of his questions. Berwald stared at him some more, this time expectantly, ready to fly into action once he knew what needed to be done.

Marcello leaned away a bit when Berwald got closer. It wasn't that his face scared him (anymore) but his expression of concern made the younger man nervous. He could feel his stomach twist from the guilt. Here Berwald was, showing him complete caring and sincerity, and Marcello didn't feel worthy of that. Not after this whole mess of screwing him over financially by wrecking their business right under the Swede's nose. It didn't really right. He didn't deserve to be cared about ( ... )

The blatantly obvious lie, if possible, just made Berwald more worried.
He grabbed Marcello's shoulders, steadying him and almost unconciously using the same careful grip he had currently conditioned himself to touch Sindre with due to the burns. In Marcello's case, he didn't even know where and how badly he might be hurt... Berwald forcibly stopped his thoughts that were trying to come up with scenarios that were each worse than the one before, and lead Marcello to one of the ornamental wooden chairs he'd made himself, scattered here and there around the store. This one was placed next to display of some sort of flowering vine.

He made Marcello sit down on it, disregarding any feeble denials that he didn't need it. Then Berwald placed a heavy hand on his shoulder and looked him in the eyes, deadly serious.

"Please," he said tersely "'f something's wrong ya need t' tell me, 'k?" And he could see something was wrong, he just didn't know what.
