Nate honestly wouldn't have minded going in to get Eliot out of an American prison. He could play the lawyer, or the jailor or even a janitor and Hardison would take the cameras and Parker would plan the route and Sophie would be the distraction... They would have just walked Eliot right out of there. This wasn't going to be like that at all.
It was dark and dirty and smelt worse than he might have imagined in these dingy corridors. It had taken him four hours just to get past the shiny exterior and he still didn't know where Eliot was. He was reliant on following this obese guard to her, reliant on the money that had already exchanged hands and the promise of more to keep him safe back here. There weren't any cameras, just men with guns and tazers on every corner. He didn't have phone signal either, but the ear buds were working, and the tiny tracker he was carrying, and Hardison was reassuringly quiet on the other end in case he needed him. A prisoner inside a cell sobbed uncontrollably as they passed and Nate forced himself to remember that, as toxic as this place was, he was here for Eliot. He couldn't free them all.
"We have three to suit your needs." the guard said.
The money they'd exchanged for Eliot was safe in Parker's hands with her hissed, "I have it, Nate."
"One of them I would not recommend." the guard continued oblivious. "A Houdini, you know? Not much worth for you."
Nate nodded, and put that one on his 'likely' list. "Only three?" he asked. "Do you keep them separate from the men?" He tried to sound disinterested. Eliot could handle herself. He had to remember that.
"Everyone is separate here. Too dangerous otherwise, yes?" The guard grinned, turned another corner into another unending corridor. Nate tried not to be too relieved. Eliot was going to need some careful treatment after this, no matter which way events unfolded.
"Show me the Houdini." Nate asked, wary of taking too long, the other half of the con getting ahead of them. The guard shrugged, and muttered something unintelligible. He crossed to a cell and threw the narrow window open, letting Nate step up to take a look.
The girl inside was no more than sixteen, stick thin and shaking in the corner. Not Eliot. Nate braced himself, turned away with some effort. "This one looks like a child. I want something with *muscle*." Nate scowled, not having to force the disgusted look. "You told me these women were dangerous. If you lied..."
"No, no!" the guard said, pulling back. "Come, here. This one." He slammed the window shut and scurried down the hall to another reinforced door. The window into this cell showed him Eliot; bruised, scraped and sitting casually in the corner of the cell. Something in Nate roared in triumph to see her straight-backed and composed. As if she'd heard, Eliot looked up.
"Yes. This one." Nate said, knowing his voice would reach her.
When the door opened it became obvious quite how much she was hiding behind that posture. She didn't stand to face them, just looked up at them both as they entered the cell, the guard wielding his cattle prod warily. Nate itched to scoop her up, carry her all the way home and make sure she was alright. Instead he just held her gaze as another guard was brought in to drag her to her feet and support her stumbling walk back towards the front of the building. "I would recommend a tazer with this one." the guard was saying. "As you can see, it starts to have after-effects after too many uses, but to maintain..."
There were four gunshots and Nate froze, ignoring the explosion of noise on the ear buds as everyone demanded to know what was going on.
The two guards collapsed on either side of him and behind him Eliot slowly sank down the wall to the floor, gun still in her hand.
Nate had never before seen her wield a gun, no matter the circumstances. She looked up at him, hands hanging uncuffed over her knees and Nate shuddered. "There's a girl a couple of cells back." Eliot said, clearing her throat. In the pause she lifted the gun and shot the two guards who had come running at the sound of gunshots. "I ain't leaving without her." she finished, voice raw and hoarse.
Nate just nodded and stooped to pick up the keys off the guard's body. There were two clean shots - one in the side of the chest and the other in the temple. Same on the younger guard. Nate forced himself not to stall, to move. "I'll get her." Nate said, reaching out to touch Eliot's shoulder - needing that much at least. She didn't pull away, but Nate thought she might have wanted to. "Guys, we're moving to Plan F. I need everyone in here." he said across the earbuds.
There was quickfire consent on comms and then the sound of his crew working their magic. Nate ran down the hallway, knowing there would be more company on the way and they were far too exposed. There was another couple of shots as he threw the door open. The girl inside didn't even look up as he pulled her into his arms and lifted her, carrying her back outside.
Eliot was already supported between Alec and Parker, moving carefully towards the Plan F exit. She still had the gun in her hand. Nate looked down at the girl in his arms as they broke into the daylight, Sophie waiting for them, and he wished this felt more like a win.
