Julie stands in the doorway of her empty flat and looks around. Nothing to say goodbye to: everything vanished in a single night of rubble and gore.
First the bombs, and her office block is on fire. Then snarling shadows pour into the streets; her husband and son aren't answering their mobiles. In the morning, she's advised against viewing their bodies, but DNA evidence, she's told, is conclusive.
The amputation of her life here is so quick, so thorough, the wound is almost painless.
She's going... anywhere other than this cursed city. She shuts the door and doesn't look back.
