It's like they're eyes wide open and yet, keep their eyes shut. They can only hold so much pain before it gets shunted off to one side where they feel it, share it, hold it in their hands, but don't look, don't touch. It's standing back to back and never stop fighting. At least they don't have to look over their shoulder anymore.
Something about this just gets me. It's brutal but beautiful and love the idea of how he clings to reasons and that you covered the hearing aids. I had wondered how to work those in, and this is all just... gah. Beautiful.

I'm 710 words in and not sure I like it, but it's coming.

And Niko. That's where I stalled because you write him so amazing and then there's these incredible amazing fics on AO3 I've read about Black Widow and they feel right, but I'm looking at it and realizing how much his head isn't quite on straight and that I'm not sure I'm ready to skate in his perspective in just the areas I'm comfortable.
I am grateful and awed when you call me a writer you admire, but I take a lot of your work as my own standard to work toward. Our writing style fits: we both tend toward understatement, poetry, and a whole boatload full of angst and you do it so well.
So. Just needed to get that off my chest.

(We've been repainting the kitchen. And have now discovered that the ceiling needs re-repainting. And need to get baseboards. And decided to add crown molding. Ordeal, man. ORDEAL.)

B) Sweet baby pandas, that IS an ordeal. Sounds like money, time, and madness. Am I close to the mark?

b) My knees hurt and are bruised (hush! from kneeling on floor and/or counters to do the cutting!). But the walls and baseboards are lovely! I shall (among other things) put the kitchen back together today. We'll get the ceiling and crown molding later. After all, we did without baseboards for QUITE a long time -since the LAST time we painted the kitchen, in fact. Sometimes we're slow at completing projects....

b) You know, I wasn't even thinking anything dirty about your knees, and then you hushed me, and I laughed out loud.
Nothing wrong with being slow at projects. It sounds like you're on top of stuff anyhow. I'm happy for you and all the crazy-huge stuff you're taking on that appears to be working out despite the madness. This is also one of the reasons I'm happy I rent -- my landlords take care of all that sort of thing. :)
