I really think that spot is best for any kind of quote that you want to be able to show when you want to, and cover when you need to. I really like the idea you had about taking equal out of the tattoo, because you're right, it wouldn't fit.
As for fonts, the best I can give for advice is to browse dafont.com, which I'm sure you've already found years ago because its very popular, but has a great selection.
I definitely want to see a picture of it when you find out what you want and get it!

I've been having a look at dafont.com for a while now, maybe I'll post again later when I've decided on a couple of fonts I like. :)

A friend of mine has a tattoo on the inside of his wrist that says "Corpus Christi." It's the name of a play in which he played the main character, but it also stands up as a concept on its own. "Prometheus Unbound" could have so much meaning on its own.

I think "unclassed, tribeless, and nationless" would look good. Three words is probably easier to fit in than four, and although I can't suggest a good font, I agree that there's something odd about using a typewriter font for a Romantic poet. Although it might work.
