AU: Harry doesn't grow up with the Dursleys

This list more or less goes hand in hand with the other list I started today, Mentorship and adoption (Harry-centric) - where I only take stories that follow canon at least for a while. This list is for Harry having a different childhood - which means in a lot of cases also being adopted or at least mentored by someone

When I first saw your post, I thought at first "No, I can't have missed a list by you on this topic"... (As I certainly would never - at least not deliberately - remake a list you already have. I am sure to have told you already but have to repeat it once more: I really, really admire your lists. And I can't imagine the time it takes you to keep up with all of them.)

Will add it, thanks. Got caught up in reading a new fic I saw recced to you lately on Fictionalley.org, HP and the Secret Sanctuary. I'm pleasantly surprised! It's a very original sixth-year story! Good Dumbledore and has a nice Potter Manor - but for once a good explanation as to why James and Lily hid under the Fidelius and not in this Manor - which would have been a lot safer...

Euh. Another question: who takes care of Harry pre-Hogwarts? Assuming you meant it for this list and not the other with "nearly-canon till Hogwarts".

Has anyone recced Alternity yet? You can still find a chapter or two on ffn, but it was one of the first multi-authored AU's, bsck in 2000 before GoF, and was premised on Voldemort killing James & Lily and then keeping Harry for himself and raising him as his son. Muggleborns were in detention camps and Muggles were semi-enslaved. Well-plotted and interesting stuff.

Euh, never heard of it. And with Voldie being the one to raise Harry certainly not one I'd want to read.

What do you mean by "you can still find a chapter or two on ff.net"? If it's abandoned or "lost" - in other words with only a few existing chapters - I'll certainly not add it to this list. There's nothing more frustrating than to find a good story, start reading it and when you reach the end, find out that it's incomplete and no update for months and months!!!

If it still exists, though, could you please give me an exact link? I hate having to search through tons of stories that vaguely have a similar title to find the one I need. And moreover right now with the search-function down, I can't add it without an exact link.

Here from hogwarts_today. The ones I know are generally Remus and/or Sirius raising Harry. Hope these help.

The Maddest House by busaikko. Summary: Remus/Sirius; overall rating NC-17; in the aftermath of Halloween 1981, Sirius Black finds himself in a safe house with baby Harry. (The story ends in 1991, months before Harry would enter Hogwarts.)

Five Ways Remus Lupin Never Raised Harry Potter by juliette_kelley. Summary: Remus/Sirius in some scenes; rating PG-13; Five scenes. Five different ways Remus Lupin could have raised Harry Potter, but didn’t.

Scenes from Another Life by Helene. Summary: Remus/Sirius; rating PG-13; The night James Potter died, Sirius Black stopped to think, and three lives unfolded another way.

Then there is one more but I'm not sure if it fits in with your restrictions. I'll inclde it and you decide. Five Ways Sirius Black Never Raised Harry Potter (scene 1), (scene 2), (scene 3) by juliette_kelley. Remus/Sirius, Rating R to NC 17 depending on the scene. Each of the scenes are unrelated one-shots. The last two have never been written/posted.

Well, looked at them and decided that both of the "Five Ways" stories don't quite fit on the list. It's basically five unrelated ficlets or drabble-pieces of might-have-beens, not enough of a story to fit in any of the three categories I have. But added the other two.

I also remembered that there is a community domus_felicus that is supposed to be dedicated to stories of Remus and/or Sirius raising Harry. I've never checked it out so don't know if there is anything of use to you but figured I'd pass that along.
