Dinosaurs in the Architecture - Yuletide fic, His Dark Materials

Not everyone agrees, I know, but I really, really enjoyed Yuletide this year. fireriven wrote me a wonderful Strictly Ballroom fic, full of the wild, hot pink, glittery DRAMA of the movie - and she's not even Australian. She even managed to include femslash, no less, as a way to relate back to the very first scene of the movie. If you're a fan of Baz ( Read more... )

!! I need to go to bed shortly, so I can't start a 10,000 word fic but the concept sounds fantastic (Darwin and his cohorts! I a such a fan!) and I will certainly mark it to read first thing tomorrow.

Well, Darwin and cohorts don't personally appear - though Wallace did in an early draft - but their assorted theories do!

I've read now. This is absolutely brilliant. All the ways you use the daemons are so inventive, the characters and world-building are great (perfect use of the angels; the 'unwriting' idea is terrifying, but the angels themselves are sympathetic), and I did not see that ending coming at all but it's perfect. What an interesting island that must be.

Thank you! I loved writing this, particularly as when rereading the books I realised how little page-time Baruch and Balthamos actually had.

KRAKEN DAEMON OMG! And dinosaurs and Darwin and the Isle of Glass as a hidden refuge. And Tasma's size and strength as advantages once she learns not to be ashamed of them.

I love this.

I'm so glad you liked the Kraken! While Tasma is not like me in other ways, I borrowed a little from my own adolescence - at age 11 I was suddenly very big and strong, by far the biggest woman in my extended family - and thought about how those feelings might manifest externally.

Ok, likeadeuce recommended this back when Yuletide happened, telling me I could read it without knowing the books, but it was long so I put it off for awhile until I had time to devote to it. Now, I'm so glad I did. This is simply gorgeous, and even though I don't know anything at all about the source material I was able to follow everything perfectly. I love the idea of Tasma becoming more comfortable with herself through her daemon (and I related to her more than a little), and I love everything you did with all the various daemons and the ways the world would react to a dinosaur. The end was a great adventure, too, and I love the idea of this fantastic little island. Lovely, lovely work.

Thank you! I also related to Tasma more than a little (though I'm not as tough as her!) Daemons are tremendous fun to write, and I'm glad they came through clearly even if you haven't read the original - if you do read it, Book One is the most fun and contains pretty much everything except the angels from this fic.
