I don't know of specific books on the topic because if you're not ready for the temple prep class, the information is very basic and very simple. Do you know what ordinances are performed in the temple and why? (I'm sorry I just don't know exactly where you're coming from so I don't mean to sound condescending)
1. Baptism for the dead This offers those who passed on and did not get the chance to learn of the gospel, to be taught by other righteous spirits and they have the option to accept it, but cannot be considered a member until their baptism has been done.
2. Confirmation for the dead This follows the same logic as above, but has to do with the laying on of hands for the gift of the holy ghost.
3. The initiatory This is an anointment of potential blessings should you live righteously, and it also gives you some idea of the latitude of these blessings. This you do for yourself first, and then for those who are dead. It is this ordinance that gives you the right to wear the garment of the holy priesthood (garments).
