Shane wasn’t huge on the whole ‘family’ thing, so going home for break wasn’t quite what he considered to be a good time. Plus he had just been home a few weeks before for Thanksgiving so it wasn’t like he was missing his family terribly. Normally he tried to stick it out for the entire duration of the break but this year was different and he had planned on coming back to school sometime that week, making up some stupid lie about a project he needed to work on. Of course his mom agreed to let him come back early, he probably could have told her he needed to get back to the meth lab he was harboring in his dorm room and she would’ve grabbed the keys and driven him back without blinking twice. Somehow, before he had decided when exactly he would be coming back to school, he had a somewhat strange conversation about his smile with Carlson. She called it cute. And yeah he wasn’t going to lie, hearing people say that still made him pretty happy. It had taken a long time for him to get over his hatred of that stupid smile and having girls

Carlson was a flirt. It was well known, and she didn’t care. She liked guys, and she wasn’t one of those shy girls who were afraid to hang out with guys. Hell, she wasn’t even one of those girls who were afraid to have the confidence to be the one to ask a guy to hang out. And it pissed her the hell off when guys were intimidated by it, and so the fact that Shane was cool with hanging out with her on her terms was good. Especially since this wasn’t even a date, this was just two friends hanging out. Which, as pathetic as it was, some guys couldn’t even handle not being the ones to orchestrate a guy and a girl friend hanging out. Even though, Carlson would admit, she totally thought that Shane was cute, and sweet. “I won’t speak to you for the rest of the day if you lose that balloon.” She threatened with a slight tease in her tone. Once they got into the park, Carlson turned a sharp left and made a beeline for The Wild One. The best part about this park was that it wasn’t kid-friendly like the other more well-known theme parks in

As they walked into the park Shane tied the string of the balloon around his wrist like his mom used to do when he was younger. He was starting to feel pretty kid-like again, being at an amusement park with a pretty girl and no parents to stop him from riding any rides he wanted was pretty uplifting. He wasn’t even sure he felt much like a kid when he actually was a kid so he was hoping this feeling would stick for the rest of the day. Carlson immediately headed for a large, wooden rollercoaster called The Wild One. They stepped in line and Shane noted that all of the rollercoasters were wooden instead of metal. He hadn’t been on a wooden rollercoaster in ages but he distinctly remembered riding one with his dad when he was 7 and crying because of how rickety it was. He pushed the thoughts away when Carlson asked him how his Christmas had been. “Pretty good. You know, spent some time with the family. Caught up with old friends. How was Christmas at school?” Shane had learned to make any comments on family time short and sweet before

“Christmas at school was what you would imagine Christmas at school to be. Only a few people were even there.” Carlson shrugged, not wanting to get into how she really felt about being left at school for a holiday while her parents traveled through Europe. It was kind of a sore spot for her. Sure, most teenagers would love for their parents to give them complete independence and leave them the hell alone, but Carlson wasn’t one of those teenagers. She loved her parents, and spending time with them, and it was the opposite of fun when her parents left her alone and went and did fun things without her. But Carlson didn’t want to linger on those thoughts, because she was here, at an amusement park, with a super cute boy, and was going to have a good time. Shane seemed like he loved that ride, and Carlson couldn’t help but laugh at his enthusiasm. When the employee came around to let everyone out of the carts, all Carlson had to do was lean forward, bat her eyelashes, and flicked her wrists in her lap in the right motions to make him let
