David didn't really think about the implications of what he was about to do. He just needed some solace, some comfort, after that huge fight he had been part of. He was aware of what was at stake, he knew what he was risking, but all the warning signs and alarms going off in the back of his mind were silenced by the profound ache in his heart. So he just went on with the current, reached out to take what he needed - and what he needed was sweet words and soothing caresses.
He never thought it would lead anywhere else; he never thought the friendship they shared would be a threat to the rest of his life. He was just looking for a peace of mind he didn't feel then.
Michael had thrown him off balance; Michael had turned everything in David's life around twice and then a third time, and now David was at a loss for words, sitting in front of Archie with his hands laced on top of his lap.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"Sorry doesn't even start to cover this," Archie whispered back, the hint of tears still present in his broken voice. "You-you left me that night, you went straight to Michael and you-"
"I reached for him because he was my best friend," David interrupted.
"I don't care!" Archie finally exploded. "You cheated on me with him, Cook! Don't expect me to be all smooth and understanding, you know? I have feelings!"
"And I'm sorry I hurt them!"
"You didn't hurt me, Cook," Archie lowered his voice again until it was barely a thread of voice. "You crushed me. You chose him, you allowed him to console you," his tone was accusing by then, and David wanted nothing more than to curl into a ball and die, for everything Archie was saying was right. "And then, you just-you just thought I'd be okay with him sleeping with you?"
"It was an accident!" David exclaimed, a feeble attempt for atonement.
"Your accident is costing me my health," Archie stated calmly. David felt the tears in his eyes. Archie finally stood up laboriously. "I don't want to see you again, Cook. Never again."
David remained sitting in the uncomfortable chair in the dim lit café, under his cap and his fear, while the only man he had ever loved walked out on him.
