David is nervously pacing around the waiting room in the hospital wing. He can't wrap his head around what has happened, how his only son-whom he had to leave in this boarding school, has ended up wounded. He's so going to kill someone - but first, he has to make sure Adam is okay.

"Mr Cook?" he hears from behind him. He spins around so quickly that he feels dizzy for a few seconds, and when his gaze focuses again all he can see is a pair of chocolate brown eyes staring intently at him. "Mr Cook, are you okay?"

The owner of the voice and the pair of deep brown eyes can't be older than seventeen, David decides. He huffs. "What now? Do they send a student every time someone gets injured here?"

"Mr Cook," the boy chuckles. "Thank you for the flattery, but I'm Archie, Adam's teacher. He's fine, just got hit in the head by a ball. He'll be discharged in no time."

"Archie?" David repeats stupidly. He's mesmerized by this young man in front of him, the dimples in his cheeks accentuated by his perfect smile. "I wasn't aware-"

"We've spoken on the phone a couple of times," Archie supplies. "If you want to, you can go inside and see your son."

David hastily steps forward, but before crossing the threshold of the open door he frowns and turns around to see Archie standing there awkwardly. "I'm sorry," he apologizes. "I-"

"It's okay," Archie keeps smiling. "You're worried about your son, and he's so young still. Four-year-old kids shouldn't be away from their parents." As if belatedly realizing what he has just said, Archie lifts a hand to his mouth. "I profusely apologize, Mr Cook. I shouldn't have-"

"I know what I'm doing is not the best parenting ever," David admits. "But it'll only be this school year," he adds. "By the end of June I will be done with my touring."

"Oh. June is just a few weeks away. Adam will be happy to go back home with his father."

David smiles, lets the feeling bubbling in his chest take over. "You know, Archie, I think Adam will need some tutoring over the summer if he's going to be sent to regular school next year. You know, to make sure he won't be behind."

Archie snorts. David knows it's a lame excuse - this is the best school in the whole country, after all - but he doesn't care. "I suppose I could do that over my own break, if you're looking for someone."

David bites his lip. "I am looking for someone, indeed," he says, but it comes out loaded with some underlying meaning that he hopes Archie doesn't get. But then again, he finds himself hoping against hope that Archie understands.

"Me too," Archie whispers, a glint of something indefinable in his eyes. "Me too."

David nods and motions for Archie to follow him inside. From all he has heard from Adam about his teacher, this Archie is someone his son loves, and David knows that he can grow to love him too.
