so... i was trying to rearrange my desk.. for no good reason. and my external hard drive dropped. i didn't think twice of it.. it looks so sturdy. but it doesn't work any more. greg can't get it to read at all. we called a couple of companies about recovering from a physically busted HD and they say the estimated price to have it fixed is eight

Yeah, data recovery is expensive, but $800 actually isn't so bad. I wouldn't toss the hard drive. Maybe in a few months you'll find the photos, depending how many unique ones there are on there, worth the cost.
