Despite all the things I said in my two-posts-ago post, I'm starting to think less and less about studying abroad. This is mostly because I am 100% confident I bombed both my statistics and chemistry tests this week and don't feel I deserve to do something fun. (And let me just note that when I say "bombed", I mean there is absolutely no way I got ( Read more... )

No one likes admitting that they need help, you know :P If you get tutoring now, it's still early enough in the semester to turn your grades around. If you wait, the less time you have to raise your grades.

I agree - no one likes to ask for help, but the longer you wait, the worse it gets, and then you just feel even more lost.

ALSO. I really don't think you should give up on studying abroad or anything "fun" just because you're struggling in a few classes. College is a completely different ballgame, and every college is different. C's do not mean you're a terrible person, no matter what grades you're used to getting. There's a reason my school doesn't actually give freshmen letter grades - because they know that kids used to getting A's and B's have a hard time getting C's. It's not just you! <3

I guess I'll see what I got on my test, then decide whether I should still get help for the class. I don't want to, but I also don't want to get a bad grade and drag down my GPA.

Oh, I do have a bit of good news, though. Somehow I eked out an 81 on my statistics test! It's still just barely a B, but it's a B and that's much better than I thought I was going to do. (I still don't have high hopes for chemistry though).

I think it's weird that they don't give out letter grades for freshmen! (Was that at UF?) If you ask me, I would've guessed that the reason freshmen have a hard time getting the grades they're used to from high school is because they start slacking off now that they're in college and generally away from the kind of direct parental supervision they're used to. But what do I know? XD;;

Anyway, thanks a lot for the feedback. ♥ It makes me heppy to know that people do actually read these posts and sometimes they care. And maybe I'll still give studying abroad some consideration... Can't hurt, I suppose!

That sounds like a good plan. See how you did, and then you can better evaluate if you need the help or not. And hey, congrats on the B! That's awesome! Stats is a pain, too, but once you get it, it's really not so bad.

It was at MIT - I don't have grades for my entire freshmen year because they didn't want kids freaking out and dropping out (or worse) because college is so much harder than high school. (Then again, I had to work my ass off in high school, so I guess I was just used to it...) I think it could be some of what you think too, though - in general, kids get away from parents and structure and woo! PARTY! Or something. XD

I definitely read this - I know I'm not always fast, but I want to keep up with you! And I do seriously think you should look into those opportunities - there is a lot more out there than can be learned in a classroom, and you deserve those opportunities!
