I. omg. what.

So Sarah Palin's kid is pregnant.

Let me be more specific: the rabidly pro-life, hyperconservative, OMG FAMILY VALUES woman that McCain picked to appeal to his religious right constituency....has a pregnant 17-year-old daughter.

I can't even...what. This. I mean, on the one hand, I feel sorry for the girl.

On the other, wow. I think I see ( Read more... )

This is something I don't say very often, but I feel it is necessary under the circumstances.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh, American politics. You bring so much entertainment to my life.

Oh, please. In biblical terms, 17 is perfectly acceptable-- at least if getting what the fundies want means accepting it. Besides, who's kids do you think get knocked up at 17-- enlightened liberals? No, we give our kids access to birth control, as often as not.

And we teach them about safe sex. Which this girl certainly wasn't having.

I just. I mean, Mike made the point that the spawnling is practicing what the parent preaches, which is true enough, but I just...holy crap.

And you know that if it was Obama or Biden's daughter who'd gotten herself knocked up at 17, the RR would be SCREAMING that neither of them could possibly govern the country based on his inability to govern his own family. Yet Palin's kid gets pregnant and we're all praising her maturity in deciding to keep the baby? Are you fucking kidding me?

I'm not praising the kid, that's for sure!

Nor am I, but it seems most of the RR pundits are all happy that she's keeping it.

you know, in IT we say, the issue is not whether the technology will fail us, it is how we respond when it does fail.

Likewise, even parents who do the finest job passing on their values to their children can count on the humanity of their children causing them to make mistakes and to make decisions that run sometimes counter to those values. The measure of the family values is not the perfection of all concerned, but the reaction of the family to the inevitable failures we all have.

That's reasonable, yeah. *nods* I just find the entire situation to be really...I'm not even sure I have words for it.

Mostly I just feel sorry for that poor girl, and separate from that, I find the entire thing freaking hilarious given how hard the Republicans have been known to hammer on Democrats whose sexual morality was, um, somewhat less than stellar (Clinton, Edwards, et cetera.) And obviously the Dems have done it right back; I am completely aware of that. But it's a bit of stones and glass houses from here.

and most of the base she appeals to will not care. It also spikes those insipid Kos Rumors that Trig is actually Palin's grandson. Seems the daughter was taking advantage of Mom and Dad being preoccupied 5 months ago (the daughter is 5 months along).
Many, if not most of those Palin was to sooth will see this as no big deal.

The thing is, though, the religious right is the one generally screaming that we should teach abstinence-only sex ed in schools. Sure. Look how bloody effective THAT is. If you want to reduce teen pregnancy, give REAL INFORMATION and REAL ACCESS to contraceptives - I never asked for them, because I personally didn't date anyone in high school for whom I would've needed them, but had I gone to my mother and said "I would like birth control pills, please" then we would have discussed it and I would probably have gotten them. (Hell, if I had known how awesome they are at making me NOT HATE MY LIFE every month, I would've asked for them when I was 15, and probably could've made an argument for them.) But this is the same RR that's saying that abstinence-only sex ed works. Well, clearly, it doesn't, because I imagine if any family in the COUNTRY is teaching its spawn the abstinence-only route, it's probably Sarah Palin's. See how effective it is? Only not ( ... )

Oh yeah I heard about that one. She's being officially investigated for it.

And this is the woman to whom we will look for leadership and guidance?

The "Washington is broken" refrain is sounding better every second - and being as I'm from MD, believe you me, I know how true it is.
